I installed this oil cooler last night. No real good reason for doing so but i'm curious if it will offer any better cooling. I posted a tread 2 months ago about how my 96lx w/ 130k and well maintained got hot enough to kick off the ac while i was running fast and fully loaded over the pass in Mojave when it was way hot outside. Since then i have not had the ac go off. I installed a new oe fan clutch last month. I was wondering if an oil cooler would help any. With what I spent on the project I might as well of got a new radiator but what fun would that be?
I fabbed some brackets to hold the cooler out of aluminum. the brackets are secured to the 2 horn bracket holes, the 2 holes on the pass side of the condensor, and a couple holes i drilled into the center support.
here is the parts list
earls oil cooler (6"x12")---$40 new on ebay (120$ in real life)
canton racing billit sandwich adapter w/ 1/2 npt---50 somethin$
earls fancy pancy overpriced racing hose (5/8 id x 10 feets)---50 something$
earls hose brackets--30ish$
honda 1100 radiator fan--30$ ebay
fancy drain plug that i ruined 17$
other plug i ruined 4$
aluminum and fasteners 30 somethin$
wire and switches 30$
oil temp send out 20$
oil i dumped all over the garage and had to replace after i ruined above fancy drain plug---32$
wrenching on cruiser and posting the damages for you all---priceless
the cost for a new brass radiator---bout the same
I started with a derale thermostat integrated sandwich adapter but returned it cause it only had 3/8 npt and i wanted the most flow possible so i went with the canton billit piece. Try and find 5/8 id oil hose that will take up to 250 degrees and 70 psi at your local pep boys or napa or even mcmasters--none of thenm can help you-i had to order the pricy stuff from summit.
i was panning on measuring the oil temp with an electric guage. i tapped a 17$ fram "sure drain" or (whatever they are called) drain plug to accept an electrical temp sender but must have cut the walls of the nut to thin cause it sheered off in my oil pan while i was tightening it in-this dumped the oil onto the floor of the garage-i was so pissed as i spent a lot of time on this. but all is not lost as i baught a grate 8 metric boly that will fit the pan plug and i have a guy tapping it for me--hopefully he will come through. i want to measure the oil temp to make sure it isn't too cool
I took the lx to colorado springs today with the fam to test out the cooler...i mean so we could all go to the mall and walk around like morons. I have a digital h20 guage and at 80mph in 100+ degrees with ac cranking the guage read a max 209 degrees with an average temp of 203 degrees which is only about 5 degrees less than usual. What i need is a test trip to cali so i can race through mojavee...i mean visit my inlaws
