I have my jack stands and getting my jack this evening. Going to rotate tires, oil change and maybe hit the grease fittings if I can find them all. This will be my third change with Mobil 1 , the first one that I am doing myself. What filter should I use? Should I drop the oil pan and scrape the gunk out of it? And where do you take used oil?

Funny you should ask.

Lots 'o posts about filters, and I was digesting it all last night. (or at least trying to)

Mobil 1 1-102
Mobil 1 1-209 (larger)
Toyota -20004 (seems to be the board's preference...I think CruiserDan is the only source?)
NAPA Gold FIL1516 (larger..made for 3.0L Fords)
Toyota YDDZ3 (I think dealerships use this one if you take it to them?)

And no, you don't drop the oil pan.

Every AutoZone type place i have gone to accepts used motor oil for recycling free of charge. I think its a law in California.

I use

M209 filter. Can be found at any AutoZone type

M1 EP oil. Can be found at WalMart

There is a small oil drain plug gasket that should be replaced. Most Toyota parts counters will give you a handful for free. If you don't have one, you "could" reuse the one you have if it's not tore up.

Take the used oil back to WalMart and they will recycle it for free. Many parts stores will do so as well.

Everyone will have a filter they think is best. Pick one you like and be done with it, just don't use the super cheapos like Fram. The list posted above has one you can choose from.

Hope this helps.

Will be buying one of the suggested filters in....about 5 hrs. Now , flame on as they say in Xmen and Fantastic 4, but.... I get that dropping the oil pan could make for a fantastic mess but if you never clean it are not just recirculating gunk to some extent?

I understand ,the filter catches the gunk and you toss the filter. Over time , with regular oil changes it probably dosent get clean but it gets to a level that your engine can stay healthy

No traditional gasket, Toyota uses FIPG. Scraping the old stuff off is a ton of fun, make sure you get it all off if you do it so you have a clean surface for the new material.

Vilas, if this were a 70's motor that was poorly maintained then I'd say by all means, pull the pan and scrape to your heart's content. But it's not. Unless your oil pan is leaking currently or your oil has never been changed, you're just doing busy work.

You don't know if you have "gunk" until you pull the pan.

For a quick preview, pull one of the valve covers and take a look.

...And post pictures.

I want my truck to run until it rust out. Got the 4 ton jack. Got a bosch 3330 filter

I took high school auto shop and did well, that is all I know. Thats why I ask so many , sometimes stupid questions. But, one thing I realized while driving home... this thing is meant to run for 25 years in the jungle. It's not a finicky BMW that has to have a wrench on it every week and be kept in perfect tune in order to run right

Pulling a valve cover or just looking down the oil intake with good lighting may give you enough confidence not to have to yank the pan.

If the cruiser has been serviced more or less regularly with decent oil, I doubt you'll see sludge, maybe a little brown varnish but that should be it.

I'd spend the money and try to rent or buy a borescope before I'd drop the pan, but that's just me. You could also try a bent pipe cleaner or swab into the drain hole, once you drain the oil, and see what you find.

Permatex Ultra Grey silicone also does a great job of sealing the pan if that's what you decide. If you do drop the pan, post some pics.

Now where in the world did you get the idea that a BMW needs that ?!

I've own four Cruisers, a BMW, two Porsches and a Merc. All very reliable vehicles.

not dropping the pan. I maybe fanatical about maintence, I do a lot of late night highway driving with a wife who didnt believe that a 12 year old vehicle could be reliable...until she met this one, now granted I had had 4-5 raggedy accords before this but even they were dependable

There are zero accounts of the 2UZ failing due to oil problems. Other things can rarely leave you stranded (ignition shaft, APPS/TPS, search for 'things that can leave you stranded" or something like that). I over-maintain too, but dropping the oil pan would be the last on my list. Dropping the trans pan, now that's a different issue and I would recommend that along with a home style flush (assuming A343F 4Spd).

Drop the pan and post pictures. Then the proof will be in the pudding
