Oil changes are the simplest and can be the messiest job around. Id rather tear into a motor than change oil. My stock FJ62 oil filter. Do I have to pour oil n it when applying? I oil the ring and put alittle in. Then quickly try to apply it. A mess do occur. I cant be the only who thought this or ask. Is there a way to "prime" it before a dry filter start. Thanks

what I do when I change my oil and filter is you get a punch and punch a hole on the top of the oil filter then drain the oil. then you apply oil to the new gasket of the oil filter. screw the filter on. no need to prime the filter.

I prime and coat the inside of the filter with a few ounces of oil that I swirl around inside the filter, but I make no attempt to completely fill the new filter.

I figure that doing this saturates the media and helps (maybe) build oil pressure faster after the oil change. Maybe I'm nuts - but have done this for years on 40s and 60s.

How could you rebuild an engine without changing the oil?

And the OEM filters I've had experience with, Toyota and Nissan, come prelubed.

And I also always leave the filter empty.
