hi all wondering if you all could clear something up for me

my cruiser has a oil balance hose fitted between the fill plugs on the gearbox and transfer case from previous owner.

the transfer case is constantly overfilled due to the hose.

i've had a heap of headaches with the speedo cable leaking which i think i have under control now. mostly due to an overfilled transfer.

been reading around and it appears that the H150F box (which is on my id plate) has an separate seal AS does the transfer case rendering the hose useless (other than filling the transfer up and emptying the box.

i know they use them on earlier rigs hence his confusion perhaps?

So do they work on our setups or has my previous owner fowled me up????

going to change oils tomorrow and not sure if i should piss off the hose.

many thanks.

I am not familiar with that setup but am curious to learn why it would be done. Can you post up a pic? On previous 4x4 I have had w a manual trans & transfer case, they were separate and "sealed" units.

Unfortunately, we did not get the manual LC80 here in the States. I would say disconnect the lines and return it to the factory setup...
I am sure the gurus will chime in

So you're saying that the hose runs from the transmission to the transfer case?? If that's so.... Take it off! They use two different fluids.

It was done on my HZJ75 also. It's a band aid fix for the seal failing, though I've seen it touted as a more reliable preventative measure from some folks.

yeah thats the hose i'm talking about alright but is it useless on 80 series?

does anyone know if we have only a single seal between our boxes like older models or a seal on each box rendering the hose useless??

thinking i should leave it off and keep an eye on my fluids for a while until someone chimes in that knows for sure. i've found other stupid things done to the truck by the previous owner so wouldn't supprise me if it is not needed.

It's two completely different fluids if it's an automatic. I'm only assuming it's an auto. Trans fluid vs gear oil.

sorry no it's a manual so the fluids are the same. it is a very common problem and bandaid fix on older models because the seal goes between the boxes.

but i have read we have a seal on each box in the 80's rendering the hose useless (apart from being good at overfilling your transfer case) that's what i'm trying to confirm/deny to decide if the hose belongs in the bin.

You likely have a bad seal, thus the added hose. I forget if the bad seal is in the trans or transfer.

My 60 has one those hoses as well. AM band-aid fix, as noted above. When the seal between the manual trans and the transfer fails, one box can and does pump gear oil into the other through the failing seal when you run it down the road, leaving one box dry of oil (a forget which way the oil normally goes when the seal fails). They both run gear oil, but at different levels by design, thus the seal between the boxes. The hose returns the oil back to the box that lost it from the pumping through the seal (I think it goes from the over-filled transmission through the hose back to the transfer). This keeps the oil levels close to normal, since the hose is plugged into the fill plug holes. Make sense?

If your manual trans 80 has the hose you can pull the trans and transfer and R&R the seal. Then you can remove the hose and replace with normal fill plugs after the repair. Chances are that one box will run dry and the other will be over-filled if you just remove the hose and run it without replacing the seal (leading to earlier failure).
