So I ran into a guy this weekend that had a 97 FJ80 in good shape with 140k miles. He lives seems to want in the $3500 range. Everything looked to be well kept and he has dealer records for the minor mechanical work done on the car and the interior and exterior were in good shape.
The only thing is that he said it had a salvage title because it was stolen new from the dealership and recovered with about 1,000 miles on the odo. Is this something that I could confirm if I ran a carfax? Anything else I should look into or worry about with salvage titles except for the obvious drop in the resale value?

Yes, thefts should appear on the carfax. However, a theft alone wouldn't cause a vehicle to have a salvage title, there must have been more damage.

Thanks Johnny, that was my fear as well. I might have to pass on it. On that note, does anyone have anyone they know wanting to sell a somewhat stock 80 or 100 preferably around 150k miles? I'd probably be looking to buy in the next month or so.
If someone caused enough damage to total a new 80 with 1000 miles on the odo, then they put a hurting on it.
Heck, please pass me the info for that cruiser if you are passing on it. I am always looking for them in that range.

If a vehicle is stolen and the insurance company pays off the owner, then the vehicle is recovered, it has a salvage title. Does not matter if the owner then buys it back, it still has a salvage title. If it is stolen and recovered prior to the insurance paying it off it does not get a salvage title.
That being said, a salvage title is no longer as bad a deal as it was in the past. After cash for clunkers the used car market had a severe inventory issue. This is when a great many lots started selling vehicles with salvage titles. A lot Heather knows puts out over 60 cars a month with salvage titles, great way to get a deal.
I personally would not have issue with a salvage title, I would just investigate it to see the cause. Blown air bags can total a vehicle in a heart beat.

I would absolutely love to have the NV5600 in Moonshine. Alas, it's not in the cards right now.
I'd like having it in the 40 as well and my current NV4500 is a Dodge unit. It is a great tranny but really needs another gear between 3 and 4.
The swap, however, would create a couple new problems. Such as ....
I think having that 6th gear would make the tiny driveshaft worth it.My pet-peeve with the NV4500 is the 1 to 2 shift. 1-2 is a 2.57:1 drop in ratio, whereas 3-4 is just a .67:1 jump. I guess I'm never accelerating fast enough to complain about that shift
I'm geared too low (3.73s in the diff, 37" tires) to start in 2nd without fogging out the intersection, and that 1-2 shift gets me every time. The NV5600 would be a huge step in the right direction. Same low first and deep overdrive, but with slightly less space between the gears.
My theoretical tow rig will have a NV5600 or a ZF-6 behind that fire-breathing 6BT.

I have the NV4500 in my PU with 4.11 gears. I start out in 2nd with no issue and never had a problem with between 3-4
Johnny I can't imagine starting out in 1 all the time, that 1-2 shift is nearly impossible to get "right" on a regular basis. All around great trans.

When I had 4.11s, I could start out in 2nd no problem and it was much nicer. Didn't have enough legs for the highway though.

So the NV5600 has a better 1-2 than the NV4500? seems this would be where you need a change most as the OD is the same?

This is the kind of stuff involved in swaps that many never even consider. Matching the power band RPM of the motor to the trans gearing to the gearing in the axles and tire size. Once through the power band the next is to fine tune the highway cruise speed RPM. Problem is, if you do not get it right on out of the box it usually involves re gearing the axles once tire size is determined. Either way it is more labor and more parts. If computer controlled, and ECU flash.
I have the ECUs programmed to the specific vehicle, gearing, tire size, driving style, and specific sensors all factor in. With the diesel and manual trans it pretty much is all in the gearing (tire size is also a factor of gearing). All fun stuff, once it is all figured out, that is
