I have a '81 B engine BJ44. Need more power. Of all the toyota diesels which is the best to swap with. I just picked up an H55 to go with the build. I live in europe, lots of 2.4ltr surfs, 80 series etc. Which is the best motor to choose for this app?
Thx!

Best to fit and bolt up: 13BT

Totally forget about anything with the letter L in the engine code.

1HZ,1PZ, HDT

done.

(as John said, the 13BT is the easiest to install with the best results for the money invested)

David,

A few of the Surfs came with a 3.0L turbo diesel that can be either mechanical injection or electronic injection. Look for either the 1KZ-T or the 1KZ-TE.

I recently drove a Fortuner with the inter-cooled, direct injection 1KZ motor. I was very impressed with it's in town acceleration. It built boost down low and pulled hard all the way through the RPM range. I believe that the extra effort of fitting a non-Land cruiser motor into your 44 series will pay benefits.

You can always turbo the B. Are you sure it's a B and not a 2B? 44's should have come with the 2B or the 3B in the BJ46. You may have a BJ43 if its really the B engine.

All - No kiddin many thanks for your input.

Much more difficult to work unusual mods here as their auto inspections are really strict. If the 13BT is a close match and easy mod that may be the ticket. I'll put out a BOLO on these 13BT, 1HZ,1PZ, HDT, 1KZ-T or the 1KZ-TE.

Stay tuned - I'll ping you back pronto with what's on the market

Just now checking EBAY.CO.UK the 1KZ-TE was sold in the TOYOTA COLORADO PRADO HILUX SURF. $1400 for reconditioned ebay # 200376663922 . Lots of those still around would rather find nice used unit with all the bits still bolted on.

BreckenridgeCruiser you're correct, its the 2B, VIN is JDM and reads "BJ4400...". Great motor, burns a bit of oil, can't blow it up on the autobahn, doesn't leak, just doesnt have any balls. Lets talk turbo - is there a salvage turbo unit off another production cruiser thats a close bolt-on mod? I'm seeing the australian units running ~$2500 when I can get a whole used motor for less - the cost kept me from adding the turbo. Where'd you get your RHD 44?

really worth the difference?

I'm in the same boat- bj44/2b, But I'm thinking the cost/time of doing a good full engine tranny swap will actually be more than just going with a turboglide setup on the 2b. If the 13bt mani will bolt up I think one can shave $1000 off the turboglide cost for just sourcing the necessary parts armed with the info here on Ih8.

Lets here some more thoughts from those in the know.......

no kidding Batman...
turbo glide installed will be roughly $4000
ANY engine worth installing will cost at least $4K plus labor plus adapting plus exhaust plus rad plus plus plus.
BUT
won't you be upset when you can not find parts for your old 'B' series engines?

in reality, Owning a Land Cruiser is NOT a cheap investment, not cheap to buy, not cheap to maintain, not cheap to fix.
want cheap? buy a jeep.

it really is that simple.

Anyone ever found a 2B water pump replacement on the market? The shaft is ~1" shorter then the 3B pump and the studs are 6mm Vs 8mm.

Crushers great point - hate to pull an original engine but seeking 2B replacement parts is way difficult

i just got one a couple weeks back, last one in north america

but

rumor has it he can get another one. Dan @ 4wheelauto.ca

There are two version of the 2B. Pre 8/80 (model year 1981) had a lot of B systems. post had all 3B systems. Funny thing is that toyota didn't really follow that rule when swapping to the 'new' version so anywhere in the 1981 can have either. You could have the B or 3B water pump depending on your engine. Easiest way to tell is by your radiator. If the inlet and outlet are on the same side (left) then you have the newer 2B.

13bt manifold will not work with a turboglide kit as they use a garrett turbo that will need an adapter plate.

I have a turbo kit available by myself and Diesel42 for $2000. It comes with everything you need. Garrett GT2052 Turbo, 13BT manifold, oiling feed and return kit, crossover pipe and silicone kit, and most importantly the 13bt to garret manifold adapter and all hardware.

Let me know if you are interested.

IF you are going to turbo the 2B then shop around.
turbo glide is a good kit
Denco, sold by John at Rad Cruisers, is a good kit.
the home brew, if it uses quality parts will be a good kit. make sure you have their sources and a parts list of what is what if you need to replace something down the road.

what you want is to be able to phone the seller if you have questions and find out about the warranty.

i do home brew but am leaning towards the Denco for my next turbo kit. the sourcing of various parts gets old fast.

That engine you drove is a 1KD-FTV. It's the same bottom end as a 1KZ but completely different head and injection system. The 1KD is much stronger and can run with more boost, power and torque than the 1KZ's can while using a lot less fuel.

The 1KZ is a good engine, but if you're building a 40 for use offroad and towing then a 13BT is a far better option. More torque, stronger head, more efficient and easier starting direct injection.
