So my 200 series LC 2017 has a nail in the sidewall of the OEM tire — to replace just that one tire is $360 - which is expensive.

At that price, perhaps I should upgrade all 4 to a better tire, no? (Where my per tire cost would be lower).

What say you?

Unless you do 5 tire rotations I'd search for a used tire for your spare. Combining a full new tread tire with partial can be less than ideal.

Agreed.

And if you did do 5-tire rotations I'd throw as cheap a tire as you can find in the spare spot and wear out the other 4 rotating just those. Then buy a whole set of something good.

So the OEM spare is an actual “real” tire — not some janky perma-spare?

Yes. IMO the best strategy is do 5-tire rotations including the spare, which will get you 25% more life out of a full set and very even wear. This doesn't really save you money directly, but the advantage is in this part: if you do get a flat and have to change one mid cycle, throw that fresh one on the spare location and switch to 4-tire. When you wear out the other 4, put the no-wear spare in the rotation with the new ones and you are back to having a buffer.

This strategy avoids you needing to find a like-worn tire if you get a flat halfway through a tire wear cycle, with the only drawback being the potential for a "new" tire in a set to be built a couple years before the others. This shouldn't be a problem unless you accrue mileage at a very low rate.

If you haven’t done so, shop around for that spare tire, it’s probably 2x what it should be.

I would def upgrade the tires at this point- 3 to 4 years old heading into the winter (don’t know where you live) but a set of AT’s suit the LC’s way more than the HT’s they come with. Expect to pay about $200 x tire (discount tire is always a good start).
