The amount of internal body work (plating, gusseting, reinforcing, etc) needed to make that function on a US-spec 100 without ripping the quarter panel to shreds seems like a waste of time and money to me.Not exactly cheap or easy, but what about a ROW OEM swingout--mounts to the right of the tailgate at the rear of the truck. Prohibitively expensive (to me) to do with all new parts, but I was soooo close to pulling the trigger on a salvage one from BeForward auto parts in Japan (which would've come with the main part and tons of the ancillaries and just had me buying another $100 or so of stuff from PartSouq), but shipping ($300 IIRC) made me stop long enough to have a needs/wants conversation with myself and then the part sold and saved me from myself.
My google skills are apparently super weak at the moment--cannot find a picture to save my life. I believe tire carrier part no is 5190360120
I had the (quite possibly mistaken) impression that the only mod is drilling holes and then mounting two reinforcing plates--no mods or reinforcement beyond that to the d-pillar required. There's someone on here running one, with a JDM lower tailgate--I'll nose around later and see if I can find it.The amount of internal body work (plating, gusseting, reinforcing, etc) needed to make that function on a US-spec 100 without ripping the quarter panel to shreds seems like a waste of time and money to me.
That's my biggest concern too...The amount of internal body work (plating, gusseting, reinforcing, etc) needed to make that function on a US-spec 100 without ripping the quarter panel to shreds seems like a waste of time and money to me.
The weight of the tire is monumental for a body panel. I bet it's beefed up like crazy.I had the (quite possibly mistaken) impression that the only mod is drilling holes and then mounting two reinforcing plates--no mods or reinforcement beyond that to the d-pillar required. yeah, everyone who attempted a thru-bumper pivot pin style swing out says it's a bit of a challenge to fit it all inside the OEM tupperware, but clearly, several people have done it and done it very well. i'm really excited about this.I put an OEM style wheel carrier on my last 100, and imo it's very strong (with 6mm spreader plates behind the panel). I extended mine to move the wheel towards the middle and make space for a hilift. I could swing on it without anything flexing and as far as I know it's still working ok 10 years later ... I was going the same route with this 100 but I decided to challenge myself to be a bit more creative. I'm pleased how it turned out, but it was a lot more work to get it right. It's a tight fit in there.
Looks like @EarthX and @wildsmith used the OEM one.@EarthX installed a JDM one—it’s his post I was thinking of yesterday....post 5 in this thread:

OEM Rear Tire Carrier
I notice on cruiserparts.net there is an OEM rear tire carrier for the 100 series, along with an "inner reinforcement structure," together running $1000, which is pretty much the price of a rear bumper. I am wondering if anyone has this setup on their US Spec 100 series, if it is even possible...forum.ih8mud.com
interesting. now i'm understanding this is a Toyota OEM assembly for some global markets. I wonder if they make one for the AUS market? I'm looking for a left-hinged carrier...Looks like @EarthX and @wildsmith used the OEM one.
No joke. This looks perfect IMO.

These are the grossly overpriced numbers we are accustomed to in Aus. ANything 4x4 manufactured here in uber expensive. But when you consider what these mechanics and engineers think they are worth as a salary then the price required to make a return, is the only way many can stay viable as a business. Mechanics and techs in Aus belive they are worth what a doctor or lawyer is worth. So you pay it or you pay for cheap knockoffs from you know whereFor 900 bucks you sure don't get much.
