A club member has a '64 45 pickup with a cab about 4-5 inches shorter than normal. Everything else looks the same but indeed it is short! And you thought your cab wasn't roomy enough. He said about 15 of these came to the states before the Toyota guys decided it was just too short and extended it to what most people see for 45 cabs.

Anyone have or know more about this?

I'll get some pics up. His truck is very clean but not a restoration. He got it when he was 9 for $500 and they bobbed the rear 16 inches. Lots of rust in the rear. It is built but not a wheeler.

here's what i've been able to scrounge up-

The truck in the picture is custom job. The doors on that are the 75 and later style while the non-removeable hard top ended in 1964. The non-removeable top trucks were a little shorter than the later-removeable top trucks but that was from front to back not top to bottom. They were more than 15 of the early non-removeable hard tops imported. I never seen a land cruiser come from the factory with a cropped top, all I've ever seen were custom jobs trying to get the hot rod look.

Negative folks. The cab is stock. He has added the doors and has done a lot of the other work (diamond plate on the rear seam, etc, IS custom as well as the chopped bed due to rust...). He added the later doors because he liked the style and inside padded panels better (i agree, for a custom job). He's also running a built V8, GM PS, discs, etc.. but all that doesn't change the dimensions of the cab he didn't modify.

The cab dimensions are OEM and the owner has done the research to find that it came in that way. John, I think you hit the nail on the head- I'm talking about front-to-back dimensions, not chopped tops. Are you talking about every non-removeable top swb with these shorter dimensions?

I'm going to try and get some pre-"rejuvination" shots for you all as my part in the mystery.

doesn't look any different than any of the other non removable tops i have saved. they are considerably shorter than removable top versions.

I agree wtih Ige........looks right for the non removable top 45's.

if he used the latter stock doors......and didn't have to cut them down.....then the top is not choped

here is the real oddball 45 fixed top(1963), fixed window......no seam, no hinge plates....

The windshield glass looks looks to be the right size for the early 40/45. The only problem is it's missing the vent under the glass. An old SOR catalog shows pictures of the non-revoveable and removeable SWB hard tops. The picture shows that the bed changed with the removeable top. It got shorter. I sure because the cab got longer and they were using the same frame.

I'll take the mistery out of this. Early fj45 non removable cabs are 3" shorter front to rear than a late 1964 removable top 45. On my early 1964 non removable top, I changed it to a 1967 cab with 3" more leg room and I can take the top off and have an early round corner bed. HTH, John Pardi

Thanks John,

I think that's what John in the 3rd post was saying, and I thought I acknowledged it but looks like I didn't.

My impression from the owner was it was a unique very early thing but you guys are much better detectives than he appears to be!

John,
do you have a pic of the inside of the dash of this truck, I am wondering if the factory welded the frame to the cowl, or if it is stamped with the dash, my 63 has a seperate window frame and solid braces to hold it in place?
