Sounds almost like someone playing a tamborine in the distance, pretty faint but audible and consistent. I know thats not much to go on but you guys are the experts, I have faith.

I have a stock and (to this point) dealer serviced '97 with 100k miles.

I also have a similar issue with my 97 w/ 90k miles... that is a perfect description of the noise. I only notice mine if I depress accelerator more than half way down. It does not seem to affect performance or change acceleration. I have accepted it as a quirk and it has not become an issue..... Does anyone think it is??

Look at the cat. Could be the cat heat shield or the shield to the pipe in front of the cat.
A hose clamp or muffler clamp works on the shield for the exhaust pipe.

It's gotta be exhaust... I think.

Try kicking the tail pipe with the car off in the driveway to see if you can replicate the noise.

I think I have it too. Mine only does it at freeway speeds.

Does yours sound like its comes from the passenger side of the engine compartment?

I'll check closer on this, did seem to be kinda omnidirectional towards teh front though IIRC. Yea, does it pretty much at freeway speeds as you accelerate to greater speed. Gunning it from start didn't seem to replicate the problem. I can live with it as its only noticible with the radio off but wanted to check with you guys first.

On a seperate topic, woulda loose belt cause a "whistling" from that area? If I open the hood at idle you can really hear a sustained "whistling" that speeds up when the AC kicks in.

ACF,

Check for dry or worn-out bearings on the water pump, idler pully, and alternator.
