Thinking about painting my 40 with a flat OD green. Question is what do I need to do to prep. In my pic below you can see what I'm working with. Not looking to take it to the fair. What grit of sandpaper would you recommend? Also what would be the best to paint the chrome wheels.

Disclaimer - I am no expert, so hopefully some of the real experts will chime in.
I have, however, rattle canned my 40.
I started by taking care of any rust.
-cut out and repair anything rusted through.
- grind down and treat any surface rust.
For the rest of the truck, I didn't sand down to bare metal but I did rough up the paint with ~80 grit paper.
Clean with mineral spirits/acetone/MEK and let dry.
Primer coat - I forget what I used.
Several coats of flat tan with fine grit sanding between coats.
I have a few extra cans for touch up just in case.

This was done 2 summers ago and it's standing up to the farm use I give it (rubbing up against tree branches and undergrowth).
The one thing I wish I had done was to add a clear coat.

Clearly, this is no way to treat a show car, but I don't have a show car.

When I rattle canned mine a couple of years ago I just scrubbed it down with a green scotch brite pad and simple green followed by a wipe down with de natured alcohol. I then used Krylon flat khaki. My truck hadn't been waxed for a couple of years prior to painting so this was good enough in my opinion. As stated above, this is not a show truck and I'm amazed at how durable the paint is.

I painted it this weekend. I just washed it, sanded it down with a 3M sanding sponge, and then wiped it down. I used Rustoleum Camo paint. The deep forrest green. The chrome wheels I used black Plasti-dip. Pretty happy with the results. At least its one color.
