How about a run somewhere near the Cedro Peak area? I have never wheeled in this area and would like to check it out.

Saturday or Sunday works for me (Oct 29th or 30th).

Open to suggestions....

I could do the 30th and should have the 40 ready for some trails by then:hhmm:

like the stocker run from last year?

nothing challenging in the legit trails we have now after travel management, but a pretty drive regardless (and i would still airdown) :D

This is a nice half day trip, and 5 minutes from my house. Count me in.

yeah can't beat the location. i'm a strong probably. the boy always loves a truck ride.

oh yeah and my son does too.

What's up with the 40?

It has a leaky fuel pump. Rudy even gave me one but they are very tedious to put in. It's been oh... 6 months now, and I almost got it.

Saturday AM works best for me.

I should have worked out a "layaway" deal instead. :flipoff2:

You guys should stick with Sunday for Steve. I'll still try to make it.

so what time sunday? want to meet at the ranger station? 9:30? 10? if we don't stop its a couple hours to juan tomas...

Sunday 10am at ranger station works for me.

Sounds like a good excuse to get out! Time and day sounds good to me. Does everyone have a radio?

I would love to make it but can't. It was side trails off the Cedrio Peak trail that gave my FJC its pinstripes several years ago. : )

Ahh...go point. Which ranger station?

  1. Sandia Ranger District Office: 35.075492,-106.386947 - Google Maps

number one is the one i was referring to. we are just heading up to FR 462 a short way up, after we group. but the ranger station has enough parking lot to not fight with and everyone can find it. they have made a nice big place to airdown at the trailhead so that is a good place to do it... (ie not ranger station)

i dont' mean to hijack the run, but are we thinking lunch? weather might be ok, i'll bring snacks at least. we can do a spur to the end of the trail we used to loop with, eat, and then loop back around (or cut the spur, but if we don't cut out the spur there isnt' many good places to get off the road). it spits you out up at juan tomas road, which is about 5 miles south of the ranger station on 337. it s ashort run, even if we ate lunch i think we'd be done early afternoon... we can just play by ear and decide over the hissing of tires too.

here is the travel management map of that area, the sandia ranger district, and it is in effect. ie punishable... page 2, cedro area is where we'd go, you can see the ranger station marked north center of map.

looking at that map the route i propose is 462 to the end of 12, eat lunch, head back down 12 to 13 and over to 542 and then air back up.... we used to be able to loop with 12 using 5627 but it is ATV only now, big bummer, it is the hill that was fun in the winter...

otherwise 462 to 13 to 542 is a couple hours tops.

FYI-

I was in the Sandia Ranger station today, getting some OHV maps for those that don't have them and getting a few questions answered. Standing next to me was a Forest Service Law Enforcement officer. I got some good information from her as she'd just been up all of the roads and much of Cedro Peak in the last couple of days locating 4x4 vehicles that were stuck in places where there aren't even any hiking paths, let alone OHV roads or trails. They had to locate one with Google Earth. If you have a Sandia Ranger District OHV map you can follow along. Of the roads open to us, 462A, 462, 12, 13 and 542, all are open but she said 12 was a muddy mess; soupy mud with deep ruts and holes. Just the way some people like it. I drove up there this afternoon and it was super muddy today. It's not supposed to rain tonight so it may dry up by Sunday. There are some muddy spots on 13, but they will probably be dry by Saturday. In any case, she will be there with a crew trying to extract these stuck vehicles.

If you've been up here there is a place under some power lines that looks kind of like really big whoops. A couple of steep, bare places up and down and then a sort of hill climb that comes up to one of the roads. It looks tempting but the Forest Service says it is definitely off the map.

I have a mobile HAM and CB in the FJ40. I also have a 2M HT someone can borrow.

Andrew, pretty much sure you have a radio. i guess the call sign in your sig gave it away. I was just asking for anyone that might not have one that we are not aware of. Just want to know if if need to pack the CB too, for those without HAM.
