Hi! I'm in the market for a scan tool!
Does anybody have any experience with any of the readily available basic ($300 range) units out there (Equus, Actron, OTC).
I work on a wide variety of cars, and need a good basic code reader plus the ability to access KEOR/EO, real time data, etc, etc. One that doesn't suck too much for around $300.
Or am I asking too much for too little?

what is it for? i have a tuner for my truck that is a scanner as well. i paid $400, but got 3 custom tunes (better than an canned tune, not quite as good as a dyno tune) woke my truck up, its faster than it was stock even with my 35's, you can adjust your shift firmness which is really nice, change your rev limiter settings, your governor, speedometer (if you have different size tires than stock)

its a sct xcal 2. if you can do a tuner for $400 it would be much more worth your money IMO. and it will work on any obdII port vehicle, but you can only load the tunes on the vehicle that the tunes were written for.

i used VMP tuning, my dad has a gryphon (re-cased edge) the guy who designed the edge, had to call it the gryphon to allow custom tuning due to regulations from the gov't, also a couple friends have troyer tuning that uses the sct xcal 2 or 3. any tuner should have the scan ability, personally i do not like superchips, friend has it on his 05 f150 and its just crappy, i had the edge previously on my truck it broke down, sister still has the edge with no problems.

if you got any questions about custom tuning, or any specific questions on the gryphon or sct xcal 2 let me know.

Here are a couple the power stroke guys recomend..

I'm not running either but have considered getting one or the other

You need to get the right bundle (connectors, software etc.) for the vehicles you might scan..

AutoEnginuity® - OBD2 Scan Tool - Professional PC and PDA Diagnostics

and

OBD-2 Vehicle Explorer Scan Tool Browser

the 2nd one webpage is pretty simplistic but there are alot of guys that swear by the product

Thanks everybody for your help! I was not even aware of the laptop interfaces, but all the data they provide are exactly what I want for not too much money.
I just ordered the PWM/ISO dual combo plus USB adapter from the second site referred to by K-808 for $155 shipped.
If the PSD guys use it that's all I need to know! (My work truck is a '00 F250 4x4 LWB 5.4L . . . just rolled over 247,000 last week!! Awesome truck, wish it was the PSD!)
