I changed the tranny filter. The owner's manual said to put roughly 7.5 quarts of oil with a filter change. (Just as a reminder) The vehicle has been sitting for about 9 to 10 months. I bought (2) 1 gallon jugs of tranny fluid. That's 8 quarts. The engine has been cold for a very long time. I filled it up with 5 quarts of fluid. The dipstick read that it was full at the "COLD" level. It is sometimes difficult to read the dipstick because all the fluid hadn't settled at the bottom yet.
I start the engine and let it run for about 20 to 25 minutes since the car hadn't been running for so long.
While the vehicle was running I tried to check the fluid level on "HOT". The fluid wasn't showing up on the dipstick at all. Just a very, very thin bead running somewhat between cold and hot.
I added one more quart and there was a more noticeable change in the level. THE IS NOW 6 QUARTS OF FLUID.
I put the vehicle in drive and nothing happened. I wiggled the shifter a little and it went forward and then stopped on its own.
I put it in reverse, there was a delay for a second, I jiggled the shifter and it went in and out of gear by itself. It sort of like a warped ball rolling.
What I'm seeing is that the gears are slipping and not staying in the gear I chose. There is no odd sounds coming from the tranny area.
Does this mean that I didn't put enough fluid in or is the tranny shot and I need a new tranny.
Please have good news. Thanks.:frown:

It takes forever to get the fluid just right. Keep it running no matter how long it takes. And keep checking the fluid. Also check your transfer case fluid to make sure its not bone dry.

trans. filter change PROBLEM UPDATE

Hello again,

New problem...I added the fluid to the engine the best of my ability to guess and now there is approx. 7.5 quarts of trans. oil in the transmission.
The vehicle has been running idle just fine with the manual throttle control next to the steering wheel. But, as I added the fluid to the transmission little by little, the engine idling became rough about 10-15 minutes later and then eventually stalled out.
Now it doesn't want to start! I wait about 5-10 minutes and try to start it and gives a big voom and sputters unconscious again.
The longer I wait the better the chance that the car would stay alive. It actually did start and ran rough for about a minute.
Another note too is that there is a light on the automatic shifter that says "AT oil temp" I think, that is lit up red.
Does that mean anything?
Question to myself is I'm thinking that the trans. oil is filled too much. Could be a possibility? If so, I'll drain some out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to get this thing started again. It ran fine before I added the extra quart and a half to the transmission.

Thanks.

This is weird. You sure you're adding the ATF in the transmission dipstick tube not the engine? Sorry had to ask.

Before you changed the transmission filter, you have any problems with the engine running rough or the transmission acting funny/overheating?

I'm not familiar with replacing the trans filter but is there anyway you could get it in there wrong?

You could drain the trans pan again, measure how much comes out, and refill it to the specified correct amount?

The A/T oil temp light is not good if its lit up while the engine is running. I think it comes on somewhere around 300 degrees which is WAY too hot. It will be lit up with the key in the ignition though and the engine not running.
