:confused: I have an early 90´s GM NV4500 and i would like to know if any of you guys have installed one of this on a FJ40.
Is it worth the cost of the kit (around $1200 + s/h)? Should i go with a Ranger torque splitter ($1500)?

:)My rig is a 1981 FJ40 with a chevy 5.7 TPI, stock 4spd trans w/AA bellhousing, Centerforce clutch, split transfer case, 3.73 gears.

Cheers :beer::beer:

I have the later model NV4500 in my '76 w/350 TBI, stock gears, and 33" tires. Around town it's basically a 3-speed (2nd, 3rd, 4th). Easy cruising at 75 mph in overdrive. Crawl ratio is only ~45:1 but it's been fine most of the time.

No regrets. That tranny is a dream.

Howdy! I am running the Ranger as an underdrive between my 5.7 chevy and my H42 stock tranny. It works nice, and it bolts up really slick. The overdrive setup is 23%, while the underdrive is only 17%. The only real noticable drawback is that the weight of the Ranger gears is dragging on the syncros in the H42 when shifting. I had my 4 speed totally rebuilt because I thought the syncros were worn out. It is not real bad, but it is noticable. You have to pay attention when shifting. I am considering a rebuild using an NV4500 because it will give me a better gear spread. HTH John

I have used both on my FJ40. First the ranger and then moved to current NV4500.

Many here will have varied opinions on the ranger splitter. I hated mine, period. When into gear with a huge grind and a "clunk", plus it was extremely loud when engaged on the freeway. Again, disliked it very much so. It was so loud on the freeway I felt like the car was going to fall apart.

IMO, go with the NV, do it right the first time, the ranger in my opinion is a band aid to give you higher gearing. I just think you are better going with proper tranny/TC/axle combo that will give you the gearing you need.
