I have an FJC and I was wondering, how are you suppose to use the 4WD-L? What about 4WD-H? I heard for some vehicles you can enable 4WD-H even when doing highway speeds, what about for this truck? What about when you want to use 4WD-L? Do you come to a stop, go into 4WD-H (while in drive?) then shift int 4WD-L? I read the manual it seems to be omitting pertinent information about shifting back from 4WD-L into 4WD-H. I could tell you what I did but I'd rather see what kind of answers I get first.

There's instructions in your sunvisor. I always stop before switching into either low or high. i dont recommend freeway speeds in 4hi and i definitely wouldnt engage the 4wd on anything but dirt, snow, mud or sand. I usually dont reach freeway speeds on 4wd anyway. welcome to mud!!!!!

Read the manual again it's all in there. Yes you can switch to 4hi when moving at low speeds and you need to be stoped and in park or neutral to switch to 4lo.

2WD-H is for normal daily driving

4WD-H is be "shift on the fly" at speeds up to 45-50 mph and is for low traction driving...you won't use it much, but may need it for deep snowfalls, gravel roads, etc...it's also nice in offroad situations (like sand) where you want to run fast but have the greater traction of 4WD - you DO lose some of your traction controls tho

4WD-L is engaged when you are stopped and the transmission is in neutral...it provides maximum control traction for offroad use and allows your ATRAC and DiffLock to also be engaged

that's the short answer....lol

What he said ^ :D

But s*** what does he know, I think he drives them as a side job...;)

yes I have the automatic. But I'm wondering, what do you have to do inorder to shift from 4lo into 4hi then 2hi?

You can shift from 2HI into 4HI at speeds up to 50 mph or so just by letting off the gas pedal and pulling the transfer case shift lever straight back. Going back to 2HI means the same, get off the gas and just push the lever forward.

To go from 4Hi to 4Lo, you must be stopped and in Neutral before pulling the transfer case lever back, over to the passenger's side, then up forward.

You should be STOPPED, IN NUETRAL to shift from 4-lo to 4-hi then to 2WD.

You probably have noticed that you have the same gear ratios in 4-hi that you have in 2-hi...but only the REAR wheels propel the vehicle.

4-lo gives you an overall LOWER gear range in 4 WD to control decents, have greater control CLIMBING in snow, sand, mud, etc. where lot's of wheel slippage occurs.

I know I haven't posted in this thread for nearly a year but I wanted to mention that I still haven't figured out this problem. I still can't shift out of 4-low unless I turn off the engine, all it does is grind and the dealership seems to know less about the vehicle than I do!

Like for example on really cold days, I tell it to recirculate so that outside air doesn't come in and freeze me to death, well after I think 5 minutes it switches back to bringing in fresh air which SUCKS when it's 30F outside! I asked the dealer what to do and they made up some nonsense about it "protecting" the cabin air filter or some nonsense which makes NO sense if I don't even have the fan on! So through my guessing, I decided to try something different. Instead of just pressing the recirculate button, I decided to HOLD the button for 10 seconds, and guess what now it doesn't switch back! :) Unfortunately I see no mention of this in the manual (though I didn't check thoroughly) and so when I asked the dealership about this, they couldn't tell me anything because they know NOTHING about it!

Case in point, the dealerships seem to know nothing about this vehicle; however this vehicle has been around for 2 years now so MAYBE they've learned something since then.

Hit the trail with a group of FJ's and you'll get all the help you'll need. Then you'll know if it's not working properly.

Is the transmission in neutral and are you at a complete stop?

I think you're "just playing" with us.

After 5 min, there is sufficient hot air blowing that whether the "recirculate" button is on or off, it would not matter. Beside, 30 deg F is not that cold.

If you are shifting into 4 wheel drive and driving, you may get a bit of binding in the drive train. Try backing up a bit, 10 to 20 feet, then shift out of 4 wheel drive.

You do not say where you are located but I'm sure there is a club near you. Join and meet lot's of great people with lot's of experience. They will be able to help educate you on the intricacies of the FJC.

This assumes you not just f**king with us

Alright well it turns out that you need to make sure that the transmission, engine, etc. are all warmed up before you try going into and out of 4L. Also the suggestion about going in reverse and or forward, putting it in neutral etc. are all good ideas that not only the dealership suggested but I thankfully didn't have to use. What was once a problem is no longer a problem at this time as I was able to successfully shift into and out of 4L without turning off the engine. One more thing, when you shift out of 4L, try to do it quickly, I think that helped.. One thing the guy at the dealership said was that shifting into and out of 4L is like shifting a Manual Transmission car without using the clutch.

Synthetic gear lube helps allot when it's cold.

change the diff. gear oil

sounds like a syn gear oil change is due.......it will only help. BTW, How long was the FJ rolling before you actually engaged your 4H and4L? :wrench:
