if you were considering an automatic transmission for an fj55, and you had an A440 and Tcase combo from a 91 FJ80, or the option of an A440 with an fj62 splitcase, which would you choose?

I do not have experience with the FJ80 Tcase.

Are there benefits to using one version over the other?

Parts availability?

Durability?

etc?

Thanks!

What front axle are you running? Intended use?
I’d be immediately inclined to the FJ62/splitcase version for several reasons, for one it’s part-time 4WD which makes an autolocker or welded diff in the front a lot more livable. There’s also more available options in terms of aftermarket gearing. You can get 4:1 low range gears whereas I think the lowest available for the 80 is 3:1.

I wouldn’t want to run a regular 9.5” in the front with the full time 4WD.

Thanks for your thoughts, Matt!

-application would be behind 2 or 3F(e) under a hacked off fj55 sitting on an fj80 FF rear and a 9.5 fj55 front. mixed daily driving, highway, mild crawling and lots of bumpy dirt-

I did not know to be cautious when using the 9.5 with the all-the-time tcase.

My first thought was stick to the fj62 stuff, but that was simply due to a lack of experience with the later stuff, and I have learned that lack of knowledge is not the best tool to use for decision making...

For arguments sake, if the later tcase were converted to part time, is there a benefit to the fj80-A440 case marriage over the long output shaft that the fj62 combe utilizes?

@orangefj45, what do you think, Georg?

Thanks team!

I’ve read through the 1/2-Hogged thread a few times, I’m familiar with your 55/2. It’s awesome.

As for running a 9.5” front full time, I’m not sure if it’s been done before, but I wouldn’t out of principle. There’s a reason they went to reverse-cut gears on the 80 fronts. A ring gear and carrier deflects significantly more going in reverse then forwards. There’s a great video (I can send you if you’d like) of a Dana 70 ring gear deflecting 0.002” going forwards and 0.030” in reverse with only moderate force applied.
I’d venture the Toyota 9.5” will be worse.

I see zero benefits to using the 80 case if you’re going to convert it to part time.

I think for a DD, I'd choose the later A440F with the HF2A case behind it. The trans is identical other than the output shaft. But the later Tcase is just about indistructible and we now have plenty of gearing options. They're also stronger and quieter.

And if you want to build the trans we have some great upgrade options.....

Cruiser Brothers is now distributing high performance kits/components for Toyota automatics.

Next big question, which OEM publication should I reference to service the 91 trans and tcase? I have a copy of the 84 A440/Tcase FSM, but it does not give insight to the later case. Thanks again!

LOL!

Georg rocks, I just try and keep up with him and the Valley Hybrids crew :)

yeah? well, where I come from, if you're big enough to do it, you're big enough to do it.;)

I'm always claiming just trying to keep up with the crew at work, but we all know how much driving I do do... Thanks for the help, Ward.

My wife wants an FJ55 since she saw one in person at the Melbourne Outdoor 4x4 show last August. She was wandering the exhibition hall with Allan Gray of Terrain Tamer and saw this survivor. Georg is looking for a clean base we can build from, looking at what engine, drivetrain and related bits we want to use. Given her preferences, the full time gear from the 80 looks like the winner, so a great thread and well timed.
