I am of a different world i guess. For about 3500 to 4000 you can completely go thru engine, transmission and transfer case.

Body work now you are opening a can of worms. I would much rather have a great body than the mechanical. You can always do a conversion later also if the engine goes south.

If you want a good overall cruiser you have to be willing to wait. I have owned over 20 cruisers and have never spent more than 4000 on one. Never. And i will not on an older one.

On this one if they can prove the mechanical has been gone thru then i would top out at 7000. And that would have to be in the last few years. I myself would pull a one riser slip.

True, after many years of spending all my time going to look at muscle cars for sale I have a list of things to think about for older vehicles.

I had read they can tow about 3000lbs and my boat is pretty small-only 2400. And by tow I mean pull it out of the water a few times a year and pull it over to the shop that sits on the marina property. I don't really ever leave the marina.

I'm willing to be patient and find the right one...I wouldn't mind having some work done on one I can get for a good price that has little rust. Hard to find though unless you live in CA or OR!

lt1fire is right, the 40 is not good for towing on the highway, but for what you want to do it's fine. The military uses modified CJ7's for aircraft tugs. Just be careful backing up in low range, 4x4 under load when turning tight as many have broken birfields doing this. Don't know if that is a fact, but seems like many get broken in that situation.

Be patient and take your time. A once in a lifetime deal come around every year if you look every day!

My 40 i got back in the late 80's i paid 1000 for it. Body was/ still is in great shape but the motor was shot. Built everything back then and just finally have an issue with my transmission. Pops out of first while going downhill in low range.

The club can find you what you are looking for. Just takes some time.

Not cheap, but it looks exceptionally clean:

Id give that one a call and just be dead honest - look, the best I can do is $______. If you are okay with that, Id be willing to make the trip out there and provided its as good as it seems to be - I will bring it home with me. .IF he has the title in hand, in his name. In the meantime -
more pictures of the tub, specially under the front drivers seat floorboards
The interior channel where the white cap meets the hardtop especially the back corners (these usually have issues)

Underneath the 40, below the passenger seat - rust usually lives under the gas tank. If he did a frame off, these common issues have been taken care of.

Id want to know if the tub is replaced with fiberglass, pics of that as well.

That darn engine looks so damn clean Id hazard a guess to say he was good at engine work.

About the only thing that baby is missing are some original steelies and caps!

He says he "must sell"...and who doesnt like an adventure? A 74 with disc job done is IMO perfection...the metal gauge is thicker than 74 so it generally holds up much better. the interior is good shape.

I believe the difference in F and 2F is minor for towing. You say youll be towing very short distances, so thatd be perfect for a 40 on the boatramp.. In 4Lo you could probably yank a 30 footer out!:grinpimp:

w0w-thank you all for the info....I did see the one in Advance. It does sound like he really needs to get rid of it so I might be able to get a deal...I am going to call and see what he says. As for the yellow one, I did see that as well and have emailed for some more info on it. I also was sent this one from a friend who lives in PC. They guy says it has minor rust but he's selling for $6k OBO.

Early in my search, I eliminated threw things as non negotiable - a 40 that was diamondplated, was carpeted ( long term and or unremovable) or if it had been rhino lined - I moved on. Lining can cover up issues and carpeting glued in that I couldn't inspect under were bad signs. I lined the undercarriage - but I also meticulously sanded and cleaned AND documented via camera the existing conditions before and after. Most mud owners have similar pics ...I'd check the mud club forum for the PC area...I bet someone has looked at it.

PS- I noticed pretty quick that good 40 owners will treat a prospective buyer like they are APPLYING to own their beloved land cruiser. Jane's PO looked positively nauseous on the day I showed up..I felt almost guilty.

I'd call the guy in Advance and feel him out. How spontaneous are you? :-)

Ahhhh the excitement of going to see a prospective cruiser - will it be better than I thought, worse than described and holy crap...what did I just do!

I'm always up for a road trip! Waiting to hear back from him. I bought my boat last year from a guy who's wife made him sell it. I almost felt guilty as we pulled out of the driveway and he definitely told me flat out he wouldn't sell to someone who wouldn't take care of it. I wouldn't have it any other way as you know those are the ones that took care of it!

Keep me posted...you have my #!

So got some info on the one in Advance-he said the engine was not rebuilt since it was working well but the carb was. The engine was sorted out with some used and some new wiring to get everything working properly. The tub is original. One rear corner of the metal gutter on the top was replaced. More pics to come.
