:DHeeey, if it were closer - Ive been asked my opinion - but we've all seen the results of pics only before..It looks like a lot of the work has been done (power steering etc)..but Id want a mudder to take a look first. Anyone in the mood to go 40 hunting in Raleigh? I know Darrin is gonna say the price is high

5,000.00 Cruiser max. Tub has alot of rust hidden / not hidden. Fuel tank area, area where roll bar mounts, and the 1/2 fix in the rear

From the pics in the link:

http://s1294.beta.photobucket.com/user/1975fj40/media/IMG_1.jpg.html?sort=3&o=14

Looks like a ton of badly applied fiberglass and or bondo and a crappy paint job.

To be fair, this is a common area of rust but for the price it should be fixed a little better than a high school kid applying bondo with a peanut butter knife and then painting over it without sanding! Pretty hasty work.

It's not worth any where near the price the seller is asking...still a nice truck though but not $12,900. I'd say $8000 MAX and more like $7000 and only if these rest of it is in good shape.

Ask the seller if he is realistic in what he wants for the truck, if he is willing to haggle I can go take a look at it. Otherwise, if he expect a price close to what he is asking it's not worth your time or mine!

Agreed,..I didn't even look at the photo bucket pics. To be fair - I don't think the guy is trying to hide the imperfections...but from my limited experience - a fresh paint job and stereo usually worry me. Maybe I look too hard at behaviors but generally the last thing a 30+ year old 4wd needs is a fresh paint job and speakers. Maybe I'm spoiled by getting mine from an ONSC member or perhaps you guys have taught me well.

Anyone know of a 40 in decent shape?

I absolutely LOVE that one! I believe I saw it here on mud...Im starting to believe you can always tell if its a 'member' selling a 40 just by what pictures they post..

Great info

Thanks for the great info! I am the one who sent you the FB message about this 40. I really appreciate everyone's opinion. I finally got an email back from the seller to go check it out and will definitely ask if there is wiggle room on the price before I do so. I am definitely looking for a 40 so if anyone sees one that would be worth checking out, let me know!

Welcome! I'm glad you made it here! Of course we want a full report when you go to look at it..Its pretty much a custom to post pics and get good feedback. The FAQs on the 40 Tech stickie have enough info to make your head swim! What are you planning on using it for? Daily Driver, Garage Queen, Wheeling,...or just to be the coolest kid on the block? ;) (all of which are acceptable)

If it had dual ARB lockers I could maybe see $7k..... maybe :)

I will definitely post some info if I go look at it although the owner has said he is only "a wee bit flexible" on the price. I am not taking that as a good sign and am not sure I want to waste my time on it if he isn't going to be willing to drop it quite a bit. As for what I am looking for-I'd say something that I can drive often (although I do have another car that I love and use as my daily driver), not just something for off-road use. I need it to pull my boat around too! :) I want something with good bones. It doesn't have to be pretty-I can always have that done myself. I love the original look so hope to find one without a lot of modifications. Love the old jump seats, ambulance doors, etc and original look. Would prefer the 76-78s as they do have the disc brakes, power steering, and F2 engine. I am also fairly new to 40s so I don't know a ton about them although I have admired them from afar for a very long time. Hope that helps.

Welcome to Mud NCNole!

Lt1Fire: Most trucks with ARB's have been ridden hard and put away wet.

NCNole For $13K I'd be looking for very little if any rust, great compression numbers, good vacuum, no leaks of any kind (vacuum, exhaust, oil, coolant). A great working stock carb, no missing smog gear, tight clutch, good transfer case and transmission, tight pinions, tight steering, good brakes, etc. The question is, is this a truck owned by a Cruiserhead who spared no expense in maintaining it or is a frat boy's beach truck that has been only maintained enough to keep it barely on the road?

IF super good mechanically, the truck is probably worth more than $5000 - up to $7000 or more easy for a REALLY solid well sorted out truck. That is a really BIG IF and odds are it is not. For a new 40 owner, it would be wise to get a pro to look at and then decide what it's worth. Take it down to the cruiser shop south of Raleigh and pay for a pre purchase inspection, Best money a new cruiser owner could ever spend.

What you have to understand is that it would cost a lot more than $2000 in DIY repairs to get a $5000 truck into the $7000 range and if you pay someone to do it double that number if not triple it. Rebuilding a 2F costs a lot of money. What ever truck you buy, you'd be better off with solid mechanics and a few rust holes than a pretty truck with a Maaco paint job that needs everything.

The surfboard on the bumper probably means it has been to the beach and exposed to salt. That is not a good thing.

cruiser shop

Great info-what's the name of the shop near Raleigh? I was hoping there was a good place close to check out any potentials for me!

Canuck's Cruisers PM krzyabncanuck he owns the shop - he has an excellent reputation. I have just moved to this area and I don't know him.

Correct, power steering does not start until 1979 and trucks with factory PS tend to be valuable and in demand.

One last thing. My first cruiser I bought in the late 80's - it looked great and needed everything, leaked everything, tried to kill you with exhaust fumes and left me stranded all the time. I paid way too much for it. My 2nd one I bought in the mid 90's - it had rust, it had faded paint but it was owned by a guy who spared no expense keeping it in top notch mechanical condition. He was a doctor and needed to drive it in bad weather. It was an awesome truck and I loved it compared to the one that looked nice. Go for good bones as you said in your post. It's cheaper and easier to buy an Aqualu body than get a worn out truck rebuilt or learn to love a flew blemishes and take them for what they are. I will still love my wife just as much when she gets old:D

I know this 40.

I bought the org rims from the guy about a year ago. The cruiser is def nice and well done, but price does seem a bit high.

It is not org all around and he has done a lot of work to it for sure.

Funny enough if u look on the main 40 FAQ on mud this is the guy that re did his front emblem and provided step by step painting. I ended up just buying a new one, but pretty slick how he re did his.

Great 40 in my opinion, but don't know the condition mechanically at all. I basically spent a solid 30 min looking it over when I was there a while back.

Sometimes yes but with internet adds i'm going off of what the add says, no if I saw it in person I may say something different.

We can speculate all day about what ifs and it's former life but without seeing it in person for an internet price you have to go off the advertisement. Now when someone goes and sees it and reports back that will be a different story.

NCNole for what you specified as something you can drive on the weekends and offroad when you can you don't want a cruiser in that price range offered anyway. I'd say a 40 at that price better be heavily modified for offroad use or a trailer queen that gets driven every once and a while. If you want something to tow your boat you may want to look at a different model. 40's do not make good tow vehicles.

Darin you and I always seem to be the lowballers of the group on these threads :grinpimp:

I am of a different world i guess. For about 3500 to 4000 you can completely go thru engine, transmission and transfer case.

Body work now you are opening a can of worms. I would much rather have a great body than the mechanical. You can always do a conversion later also if the engine goes south.

If you want a good overall cruiser you have to be willing to wait. I have owned over 20 cruisers and have never spent more than 4000 on one. Never. And i will not on an older one.

On this one if they can prove the mechanical has been gone thru then i would top out at 7000. And that would have to be in the last few years. I myself would pull a one riser slip.

We are on the same page, I've owned 26 Cruisers since the 80's and I think the most i've paid is $4000 with the exception of my 45. My favorite truck I bought for $1500 and another I traded a bicycle for. Many of the 26 were parts trucks. I do all of my own work and use a lot of used parts so for me it's never been an expensive hobby except for my V8 truck which I got carried away with.

If you can do all that work for a customer for that price, I will start having friends ship their trucks down here! Up in DC and in Los Angeles things cost a lot more.

There used to be a Land Cruiser shop in VA, the owner told me that his average get a 40 back on the road price was about $6500 :eek::eek: Not including the price of the truck.

I like doing all of my own work. :hillbilly:

I had read they can tow about 3000lbs and my boat is pretty small-only 2400. And by tow I mean pull it out of the water a few times a year and pull it over to the shop that sits on the marina property. I don't really ever leave the marina.

I'm willing to be patient and find the right one...I wouldn't mind having some work done on one I can get for a good price that has little rust. Hard to find though unless you live in CA or OR!
