Hey there,

Yesterday picked up the truck after getting DT headers and cat back exhaust installed, I’ve got this rattling noise that showed up right after. Noticeable at low speed bumps but also increases with rpm. Seems to eminate from the underside, slightly forward from driver seat, and slightly right of center. Haven’t driven for an extended time.

Im thinking it could be the heat shield on the cat, couldn’t find any examples of the sound, but I’m headed to the hardware store for some hose clamps. Wanted to get some input.

Thanks.

That's not heat shields, those will make a high frequency tinny metallic sound.

This is a thud, sounds like something heavy is hitting the truck.

Yeah that’s what I figured the heat shields would sound like, just couldn’t find an example of it.

My symptoms seemed to align with what people were reporting for heat shield rattling, that’s why I thought it could be that.

I have no idea what could be making the noise, I got under the truck and tried banging around but couldn’t find anything loose.

It might not be exhaust related, it could be something else that you didnt hear before.

The clunking sound from bumps in the video above and what you’ll hear when I’m giving it gas in the video below seem to correlate. Checked all the exhaust clamps, nothing seems loose there, I was worried about the head gasket, but nothing is leaking. New O2 sensors up front. No CEL.

Here’s the video

Sounds like plastic rattling rather than metallic clink from heat shields. Take it back to where you got it done and have them check it out. Maybe your plastic splash shield wasn’t on all the way.

Maybe a back pressure issue? Bought a mustang with straight pipes that sounded similar. A leak between the headers and block is usually more sharp.

Thanks for all the input, gonna talk with the shop today. This all definitely helps with where to look.

The passenger side exhaust bends downward before it hits the Y connector with the driverside exhaust. It may be jiggling and contacting your skid plate when your going over bumps. If they replaced your muffler they can adjust the hangar, or push on the exhuast to bend it upward

Interested to learn the outcome. Good luck.

Well we know its exhaust related cause it started right after. My guess is either a welded bracket hitting something. Like it's not lined up correctly. Could also be hangers not set up properly

Engine mount loose? Do you mind if I asked what they charged to install the headers and exhaust? Mine are still sitting in the garage waiting for a non 1000 degree day to tackle...

Thats an assumptions correlation is not causation. Its happened to me before.

I’m taking it in on Tuesday to get it checked out, as bad as it sounds in the videos it has been driving great, though I’ve been limiting how much it’s getting driven.

I did notice one of the bolt points in the splash guard broke off, thought that had to be the cause. Maybe some extra vibration from the headers, bumps, etc. but even after cinching it down tight with bailing wire I’m still getting the noise.

Engine mount was something I’ve been considering, also wondering if header bolts could come loose after a heating cycle.. not sure, everything I could reach seems good.

The cost for install came out to about 1,400 that included a rear shock that failed the day before I brought it in.

To me it sounds like header or pipe is hitting the car somewhere.
