Howdy,

This weekend I pulled the head unit out of my 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser to investigate a whirling/grinding noise. I found that one of the fans in the head unit was the source of the noise, so I disassembled the head unit just enough to unplug the fan, put it back together and reinstall the head unit. Now I'm getting no volume out of the unit. Everything else with the unit seems to work as it should, just no beep when the screen is touched, no music through the speakers etc... Something else I've found interesting is that I can turn the beep noise on in the menu, save changes, then the beep is automatically switched to off, as if the system is protecting itself.

I did pull the head unit out again, repluged in the fan, but the same issue is still there, no changes. I'm pretty certain the fan isn't even turning on now because I do not hear the noise anymore.

Another interesting thing is that I don't see the amp or dvd player listed in the diagnostics menu system check... I've checked many fuses, disconnected the battery overnight.

Can I be sure this is an issue with the head unit?

SOLVED --- After spending about 12 hours on this over the week (and troubleshooting help from Joe at OEM Auto Audio), I decided to disassemble the head unit further to see if I could find anything suspicious. I removed the faceplate behind the fascia of the head unit that the ribbon cables run through and found another ribbon cable behind it that had come loose when I disassembled the head unit the first time (I didn't take this faceplate off until now, but I had loosened it previously). I had loosely separated two of the sections of the head unit to unplug the fan initially, I'm sure it came loose then.

In the first picture, you can see the ribbon clamp on the bottom termination is kicked up a bit. In the second picture, you can see the ribbon had pulled out of the clamp on one end (same end, I disconnected the top termination for the second picture).

Reseated ribbon cable and everything works normal now.
