168K yeah I want to replace to contacts but the Toyota Dealer ( Parts ) seems they dont know what contacts and plunger. All they know is the starter. Also if I wait CDan till get back from his vacation,
Probably she died already. So anyone can help on this, please....

Thank you

Might be best to wait for CDan...
Have you read this however?
Contact part numbers in there.
Bet a search through the archives will produce part numbers too...

I know this sounds dumb, but have you cleaned your battery posts lately?

NorCalDoug, Yes I've red the article but to be honest with you my auto mechanic skill nothing compare to you guys ( The Pro ) I was hoping if I can get the starter part# from Toyota and i'll figured out how to fix' em later on.
I wish I can wait till CDan but I just dont want this happen to me:

And this is the thread from IdahoDoug just get me worries...

Also, be advised your starter may stick on as the contacts may "grab" the plunger as they have deep dents in them from wear. If/When this happens, you'll immediately need to disconnect the battery cable (positive) and you may be unable to drive the truck from that moment on.With yours, it's well into the danger zone and you're playing with fire.

Part numbers are in the write up.
You wanted the part numbers right?
For both size (Kw) starters.

NorCalDoug sorry this is really dumb, Is the correct part# so when I order from toyota I just mention the starter and the pos and neg # or?

There are 2 different starters available for the 80 series. One is 1.4kW, the other is 2.0 kW. It should state which one you have on your starter. Some have stated that the dealer can look up which one you have based on your vin, but I don't know that to be a fact.

If you have a 1.4kW starter, you want:
(positive) part number 28226-55050
and
(negative) part number 28226-74070

If you have a 2.0kW starter, you want:
(positive) part number 28226-66060
and
(negative) part number 28226-72010

Even through you're not doing it yourself, you might want to read through the various posts on starter contract replacement, just so you know what's involved.

(*disclaimer -- I'm trusting that these part numbers are the ones listed either on the slee site or from one of the threads...I didn't double-check)

Good point! I had a 67 GTO once that never started when it rained. I replaced a lot of crap before I realized that the battery terminals were not making good contact. The humidity when it rained was affecting the contact between the terminals and the battery. Cleaned it up and tightened the terminals and my problem was forever solved.

NorCalDoug, Would you please help and hang lil with me on this one...
Actually the part# below :

post \ model 1.4kW 2.0kW
positive 28226-55050 28226-66060
negative 28226-74070 28226-72010

Correct me if im wrong, those the parts to replace small portion of the starter right?
Because when I called to Toyota parts, if you want to do easy job and replace the new starter this is
the right part# 28100-66060 and yeah cost more money but those already included all the part # above.

Thanks again.
Jerry

Those are the part numbers for the contacts.
One pair of part numbers for the contacts for the smaller (1.4 kW) starter.
One pair of part numbers for the contacts for the larger (2.0 kW) starter.
The contacts are contained withing the starter -- it would require removal of the starter, disassembly of the starter, replacement of parts (listed above), reassembly of starter, and reinstallation of starter.

I don't know what the part number that your Toyota guy told you. Too bad C-Dan's having fun fishing because he'd tell you right off the top of his head. It could be that this is the part number for a remanufactured starter. If it is AND if you purchase it, you'd simply replace your existing starter with this one.

If you do replace the starter with a new (reman) starter...send me your old one...I wouldn't mind having a trail spare :D

Jerry,

Got the contacts & the plunger from Dan last week (mine is a '97 LX). I'll post the PNs later tonight if someone hasn't by then.

Frank.

NorCalDoug and SJCruiser(Frank) Thanks  , this is really good forum VERY fast responds. Definitely this forum alive!!!
Yeah that'll be helpfull Franks, Many thanks

Jerry - do you intend to rebuild your starter (or have it rebuilt) or do you plan on simply installing a replacement starter? If it's a replacement, you won't need these part numbers.

If you're having it rebuilt by someone, it might not be worth the labor expense...meaning labor + parts might be more than the total cost of the reman. starter.

Actually Im planning to rebuild the starter cost much cheaper but then since I dont have appropriate tools jack, lift... so I would rather get simple replacement ( plug and play ) new starter.
Much faster and safe time.It cost alot more money for new starter about $200.00 and more.I had no choice at all. Also where exactly the starter locate? Is that right you have to take the front wheel off?
I mean left front wheel.

By the way i dont think the old one would be good isnt it? Unless you replace and rebuild it.

Starter located on driver's side. Tucked in way down low. I removed the left front tire to access -- might be reachable from underneath w/o removing tire.

I would rebuild the "dead" one at my leisure and have it on hand as a spare. I don't know how "dead" yours is...but usually it's the contacts and plunger.

You don't need a jack or need to pull the tire. Just the right sockets (6 point socket is best).

I don't understand your post - "planning to rebuild the starter cost much cheaper but then since I dont have appropriate tools jack, lift... so I would rather get simple replacement ( plug and play ) new starter"

Your old starter will be good for anyone that want's to just replace the contacts.

Are you pretty good with tools and mechanics?

Riley, Im sorry sometimes its hard to explain by typing word in the bulletin board ( forum )What Im tryin to say is cost much cheaper just to replace the contacts and the plunger.
But since time consuming is in affects and plus the guy at the local shop may not knowing what to do..mind just simple get the new starter at all.. yeah its sukss cost over more than $200.00 just 1 new starter.

By the way... is that what the starter looks like? Also did i get the right part #? I just stop by the Toyota parts on the way home from work and when i asked the counter parts person... he found 2 different starter ..he mentioned cold specs.. something like that..forgot the other one.. well its $10buks different so I choosed the $10 more..Damn %#$*& :censor: starter so expensive    $262.36 and $30.00 core charge.... and freakin thing was heavy maybe about 10-12 lbs

I've been trying to tell you all along that there are 2 different starters. That's why there are 2 different sets of part numbers for the contacts.

To be sure, you could check the numbers between the one you bought vs. the one that you'll be replacing.
