No More ABS, What's the next step?

Hey guys, my ABS has long been disconnected w/ sensors removed when I went to Hi Steer. I want to remove the ABS unit as a whole which sits on the DS inner fender of my 80 (so I can completely remove the lining and save the lbs).

What do I need to do in order to assure that I still have a "safe" breaking system?

Can I keep the existing master cylinder?

Please advise, I've yet to mess with brakes, any upgrades I should make while I"m at it?

Thanks in advance PKP80:beer:

Yea, I would like to no more about this too. Thanks.

Assuming you drive that on the street...

If you are in an accident that is investigated they'll find you disconnected your ABS and you'll be in all kinds of trouble. Your insurance may not cover you.

Steering is kinda sketchy too. No? I heard the other day that heims are not DOT approved. :meh:

I removed my complete system from my 80/45 and the pedal feel is better now that with the ABS intact.
There are multiple brake lines ran to the front and rear and basically you need to tie the rears together on one line and the fronts on one line. The fronts can be combined using a brake axle line from a 91 and the rear can be combined using one of the 2 existing lines that run up front. I have the front brakes running into the rearmost fitting on the stock 80 MC and the rears running to the front most fitting on the MC. My brakes stop very evenly with very little bias towards either end.

Not to derail this thread from brakes but I have a quick question for you. How do you like your hydro assist with the cylinder mounted to the drag link?

If I got it right you have cross brake circuits from front to the rear and viceversa .. so even if you brake a line you still have one tire at front and one at rear .. or you loose pressure like any other common system ?

The front axle's brakes are tied together and ran off the rear output of the MC and the fronts, tied together will run off the front output of the MC. In other words, if you break a line, your screwed, just like any other system.

I don't street drive it anymore. If I was to start driving it on the street it would be after I remove the abs unit and check it all out.

GOD BLESS you for this answer, you connected a number of lost dots as to what I need to do. Are there pics in your build thread of the 80/45? I'll ask before I start going through the 100 page thread.

Hydro on the drag link is the preferred location for me. The cylinder is in a better location and I feel that the rig handled better on the road and trail with it mounted to the drag link.

None, but Pm me if you need any specifics. You will appreciate the huge improvement in braking.
