Well I'm back here after I sold my 62 back in 2004 and I have a 2006 Lexus GX470. I live in Baja now and where I live it's pretty normal compared to living in the US. We have a large community of retired Americans and Canadians. What we have down here is a lot of potholes comparable to San Diego's potholes. The square edge of the potholes tend to crack rims and damage tires. I don't want to put any lift on to fit bigger tires on because I'm in a wheelchair so raising the vehicle just makes it a pain to get in. I'd like to run 265's on stock rims (Goodyear Duratracs)

Ideas??

That should work. You could also get 265/70 or 255/75 duratrac or i know KO2 are stupid popular in Baja. And get E rated to protect against any flats or punctures but for these sizes you or your local tire shop might need to use a heat gun to bend the front fender liner in about an inch and trim a piece of plastic near the front of the running board to fit them with no rubbing. If you stick to 265/60r17 you should be able to fit any tire. The bigger sizes will better protect your wheels from potholes though.

Thanks, I got a heat gun and that plastic is going to get stretched.

I’ve run both Goodyear’s and BFG’s, BFG’s ride better but they seem to cup easier. On my 62 I ran Goodyear MTR’s 305 x17R/15 mounted on Mickey Thompson Classic 1’s (yes they were the last of the forged aluminum rims they made)
I miss the 62, but it went to a good home.
So far I love the GX, just need to give it the essentials

Cheers

@Charlie 265/70 r17's look really good on a stock height GX. I believe you can actually get the duratrac's in a C rated in that size. My personal preference for a non full size diesel truck is to get C rated if you can. I know there are lots of people that will default to the E rated because they believe it will give you more puncture resistance. I haven't seen anything other than anecdotal evidence of this being true. For a fact though they are heavier and will ride harsher then if you went with a C.

I agree on the C rated usually- I love my C rated KO2s- but if I was driving around mexico i would personally want E rated for extra insurance against flats in the middle of nowhere or rougher parts of town

Im now running Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Great tire. Got them way cheaper than BFG KO2s and perform as good or better.

Another tire I’ve heard mentioned as a great tire on this forum by some influencer and at a great price point is the Kenda Klever RT Kenda Klever RT First Impressions - Four Wheeler

I’ve never run a Kenda before, so no experience with it.

I get the reasoning, I really do, and I know it gives a lot of guys comfort to run the E's. I just haven't seen anything other than anecdotal evidence that they offer more protection against flats. I've had just as many nails and screws run up through my E rated sets as I have C's and standard all seasons. If we are saying it's because the stiffer sidewall offers more protection against being sliced on sharp rocks one could easily make the argument that a C will deform around said rock where as an E rated will rub right on it. Similar to how a flexible sword is more resilient to breaking than one that is too rigid.

255/80/17 are a perfect fit with no lift. You have to do some plastic trimming but in the end you have a true 33” tire.
