Hello,
I cannot figure out for the life of me why I have no brake or tail lights yet have signal lights. Been trying to trace it back but no luck

Does anyone have a diagram for the electrical system?
Has anyone expericened this issue?

Model, engine, year ?

What type of vehicle?
I have a 60 and had this type of problem. In the back of the driver's rear quarter there is a factory junction for both sides of the rear lights. Corrosion, water, dirt, etc got in there and the wires just broke off. Hope this helps.
As for fixing it, everything is colour coded so you can either replace the connectors with something nicer or do a splice with crimps (not my favorite).

I had the same problem; some of your wires are probably rotted out. I took the whole harness out, laid it out and looked for corrosion, breaks etc... Replaced the bad wire with new stuff and all lights work.

Fun (sarcasm), I will be looking at doing that soon too, except I think I might invest in the "GM" style weather proof connectors with gel filled terminations just so I never have to deal with it.

I had exactly the same issue. It was a bad connector where one of the blade connectors had backed out enough where it was not connecting even though the plastic connectors were fully tight.

Sorry didn't include my TLC info.
She's a 1986 HJ61 12-HT with just over 100,000 km.

Yeah we've have been disecting the whole wiring and cannot find the problem. But also could not locate the relay switch for either. I am so frustrated but I guess that's what you get with an older vehicle as well as it being from Japan, they hacked into everything for fog lights and such. It's a mess.

Nice truck :flipoff2: .
I have a few friends with JDMs and what I have seen for wiring has frightened me. Does anyone in Japan know how to wire a vehicle? I really hope this was a back yard thing and not done by mechanics, or other trades.
Regardless, you could have the problem almost anywhere, a bad splice, loose ground, shorted cables, etc, etc. I don't think the rust issue will apply to yours. The only thing you can do is start at one end of the wiring and start checking for either voltage or do continuity checks with a multimeter. Just because life is the way it is, it will likely be in the last place you look.
I would start at the back, you can see the colour codes there (at the lights) and check voltage, then move to the next spot where they have a splice (factory) which should be either on the pass or driver's side in the back quarter panel. Check there, then keep moving forward. If you lift up the carpet you will probably find very scary wiring, extra fuses, many splices, and more.
Good luck
EDIT, I will see if I have the wiring diagram for the HJ and where the relays are.

life to an old thread! any results for this? haven the same problem and would be over the moon to know where the relays are.

checked the fuses-Good for the brake lights, bulbs are good. worried when i seen the bulbs were good...

Recently went through diagnosing my break light issue.

First problem loose connection and a bad wire. Fixed.

Let there be light. Thought I was good but not knowing I was using a 24v bulb with a different polarity than my connections...was lead to this recently.

So changed the connections (red g, green w) and now I got functioning tails and break lights. And can use the box of bulbs from the previous owner. Stoked.

Any chance you have one of them trailer hitch wiring boxes if it is on the fritz this would be the problem

I don't think I do, everything wire wise in the 61 are being used in the rear. No connections looking for a home. I'm all good thanks Dieseler.
