Next project--front axle inner seal and knuckle rebuild

I often look under my Landcruiser on a daily basis. Yesterday morning I looked under the front and saw this...


Looks like I will need to take this project on post haste. Anyone in Bozeman who has done this rebuild on a 60 series that would be willing to give me some advice, or even help, I would happily pay (bribe) with food/beer. I am thinking next weekend or the one after that, or if need be the one after that.

Heheh, yeah not as tasty at all! I can see the candy apple in it though, I'll try to think of that as I am elbows deep in grease and parts :cautious:
 
I have done my 80 a few times. Not bad just messy and takes time. My advice is to replace a lot of stuff, but thats always my advice. If milage is unknown on some parts you have a lot of stuff in there. It is a good time to do a bunch of good work.

If mailage is unknown on parts you could do inner seal, upper and lower trunion bearing, the wipper seals felt and rubber, inner and outer wheel bearings and wheel bearing seal. Also nice to have new lock washers and a few other things.

If your 60 is like my 80 and want to go deep you already have the rotors off. New pads and rotors are nice. Also the lower studs tend to fail on our trucks when not tight. So a new set of studs is easy and cheap. Oem or ARP if think you need it. But new hardware is nice becouse you know it has never gooten loose and been fatigued.

This is all kind of overkill but honestly you will have it all apart. Why put old parts back in. You can add some grease to your birfields and top off diff oil and keep driving until you are ready to do the job. As ling as you keep grease in birfield and oil in diff it should be fine for a while.

Any clicking when you turn?
 
Let me just also say that if you look at my other posts you will see that i like to replace lots of parts on these trucks. New oem parts just make me happy. So take that for what it is worth. But if you are wheeling the truck and using it in remote areas i would really aproch it like i posted.

If you are just tooling around town on weekends in it you might be fine with inner seals, wheelbearing seal, inspect bearings and lots of grease.
 
Thanks rc51kid, I agree with your outlook, so I am going for it. Mileage on these parts is unknown, so new it is. I would like to do new calipers and pads, but I don't think I can afford that at the same time, so those will have to wait.
 
I'm not sure if it applies to the 60, but 80 guys will swap the birfields from side to side. They wear in one direction, and when you swap sides they get a bit more life out of them. Or you can go my route and replace birfields and spindles so you have trail spares. But then you can look at axles as well....how deep do you want to go?! And how deep are your pockets?!
 
I wish they were that deep right now, but I think I'll settle for new seals and bearings this time around. Thanks for the idea though, when I have more leeway with money I'll think about the goodies of new birfields and axles.
 
I don't suppose anyone has a 54mm hub socket they are not using? I would rather borrow one of these then buy if possible. Please let me know if there is a lendable one out there in the Bozeman area.
 
2 1/8" socket works also, I think that is the correct size..
use Marlin inner seals.
have you bought a rebuild kit yet? Georg @ Valley Hybrids or Kurt @ cruiser outfitters either is the place to get them.
 
Thanks Paul, I really appreciate the recommend. Stephen is helping me out with parts selection and such, I like the Terrain Tamer kit from Cruiser Brothers, but I was thinking of ordering the Marlin inner seals separately. Do you feel they are worth it, seals are not so expensive on their own.
