Sorry for the multiple posts these days, but gotten completely turned off on the 40/55 tech and figured it'd be more fun to do some local stuff.

My thoughts:

Had fun wheeling this month, maybe a tech style next month:

Welding how to? (MIG)

Bring a ***small*** project or scrap steel, and learn to weld. I am happy to give pointers, and guide folks to learn to weld properly. not certified but can weld okay.

thinking smaller group, maybe a limit on size of participants?

I, unfortunately cannot host, but willing to travel with welder to help out???

I have not met many of you but this sounds like a great idea. Noah had mentioned the same kind of thing a while back. I have a project in mind, but no skills or tools to get it done. Basically putting a lift kit on my pop up trailer using 4x4" tube and welding it between the frame and torsion axel. Seems simple enough, but alot of work just removing the old, aligning and welding in. Probably more than a simple get together.

Sounds great...

I agree that this sounds like a great idea, I would like the chance to meet more of you guys. I don't have any welding projects but I am always down to learn something new. I may be able to get some scrap to weld, there is plenty of scrap bens on base that i can dig through. Let me know where an when, and if more metal is needed, I will see what I can find.

I am down- we also could do a "How to not light yourself on fire while grinding session"
DSCN1290.webp

stranger, funnier, and even more boneheaded things have happened!

that pic would have been better 10 seconds earlier. next time run for the hose not the camera OK.

Your right, it's too bad I did not reach the camera 10 seconds earlier cause there is nothin funnier than watching a guy with his masters in fire protection running around yelling "I'm on fire -what do I do"
:D

"HOLEY SHIRT!"

(okay, that was admittedly bad. I guess I will keep my day job.)

On a good note, at least it wasn't 18 inches or so lower....

Brett, I would be happy to host the get together, just let me know, I like the idea, I think though we should have some set projects to do that are brought up by members, otherwise we will just end up drinking beer and shooting the s***. Which would be great too, so whatever.

I've got a couple of projects but no real tools

As my title mentions my access to real tools and skills are pretty limited. With that being said I'm starting to have a chance to work on my 40:)
A couple of projects that I'd like to do are to install a set of 1.5" shackles. From a "mud" search I think I need 4 degree shims is this correct? I installed a family cage last summer with beefed up backing plates (home depot metal) that I managed to piece together but would like to tie in to the frame in at least a couple of points. (i posted a roll bar earlier that I think could be used for this).Still cannot get my temp or oil pressure gauge to read, but did get the turn signals to work.
I also hate to admit it but have only had it in the mud and sand twice and am not sure of 4wd engagement process:frown: It's a 71 with vacuum shift knob lever under the dash that is currently pressed all the way down under the dash. Which from what I could find appears to 2wd? Not sure if I have hi-lo, anyone know?
Enough of this novel and looking forward to getting my hands dirty.
P.S. Thanks to Brian for his help earlier this year with knuckle rehab:beer:

From what I recall on my '71 40, the dash is the hi-lo control, pull out for low. The 4WD lever is on the floor next to the shifter. Do you have a transfer case shifter on the floor?

Yes!!! Pretty sure I've got it figured out now just have to try it when I get home. The pull knob is the vacuum switch that engages 4wd then the lever is hi/lo with hi being fully depressed up under dash and low being when it is pulled up and away from dash???

Thanks for the input about the roll bar not sure if it was stock but seems pretty thick, maybe cut it up and see if nobody wants it.

So did it work Tom? A way to test the 4WD engagement is to unbolt the rear driveshaft at the transfer case (I'm pretty sure it is flanged), and keep your front hubs unlocked. Have someone look under the FJ to see if the front driveshaft turns in first/reverse.

Are you ignoring the other two? Bad, bad dad. My kid's had a fever since Sunday in this 90-degree weather. Not fun! Email me a pic of your floorboard cover, dash controls. That will help me remember the config of the controls.

Apologies to all about the hijacked thread but finally am able to use the 4wd and the thing will climb up a wall:)

My question now is whether or not it should make a pretty loud "clank" when shifting from lo back to hi? Is there a particular method for doing so? I did it at a full stop still in the dirt and just about sh*** myself.
