Have had my bj71 a few months but still had several questions.

Mechanically, what is going on when my green turbo light turns off or on. Obviously turbo is initiated but what hp gains etc is going on? (13bt)

Are there any turbo specific maintenance items to do?

What rpm is ideal for cruising at highway speeds?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

The green light indicates your turbo is spooling/operating properly. Nothing to worry about.

When the red light next to the green light turns on, there is not enough boost and you need to have the turbo checked/repaired.

As for rpms, this might seem obvious but avoid redlining your engine. If I remember correctly, around 2000 - 2200 rpm is good enough.

The most important thing about the turbo is letting the engine idle for a few minutes after high rpm/high speed driving. This idling allows the turbo to cool down, as well as the engine. Failure to do this can cause the engine head and its gasket to break.

Hope this helps.

The red light in my 13BT indicates over-boost, It comes on around 14 PSI. That is how I set my adjustable boost, just off of turning that light on.

I wouldn't be running an old school diesel above 3000rpm for extended times, 2500 would be a good cruising rpm. Someone on here use to say his was good for 85 mph all day, he later sold the engine to some poor soul.

My 13BT is happy at 2,500-2,600 RPM constant cruising. That puts me at 65-70 MPH with 4.11 gears, 33 inch tires and 5th gear with an H55F.

Diesel Land Cruisers are "go slow and enjoy life" kinda vehicles. :)

Agreed.

The journey is the destination.

I love stops on long road trips. I get out and walk around the truck (often towing the Kimberley) and I tell myself it really is you going down the road in this immensely cool setup. Vain I know, but so true:grinpimp:

The more you stop the more opportunities you'll have to hear someone say "cool Jeep". You can't put a price on that.
