My Newfields are clicking on full turn in deep snow. I hear a click once in a while when turning sharp but not all the time.
It is not a pop, its a metallic tick sound.
It doesn't click on the full rotation of the wheel. Its like only half of the Newfield has the tick as the noise happens at the same place when the wheel turns.
The noise only happens on half of a rotation. The other half of the rotation there is no noise. It does it on both side but I cant hear the pass. side as well as the driver side.
I have just started hearing this noise this winter.
I have under 30,000 mi on them.

Anyone with Newfields have this problem?

Kurt
Not sure I understand. Do you mean it clicks when you turn the wheel, as distinct from actually making the turn?
In my experience the click from a birf happens when you are underway during the turn.

If I turn the steering wheel full to the left and drive, I hear the clicking.
Same for the pass side but the steering wheel is turned to the right.

It happens when I hold the steering wheel and drive in circles.

Don't do that and they won't click.

Buy some new birfs and be ready to get greasy.

Kurt,

I think I understand you. It sounds like you have wear in one place on the birf. I have something similar.

I have 10k on a rebuilt oem birf with about 1500 miles since a repack. I am about to pull and replace it. It pops/clicks on a turn when moving about halfway through the turn, particularly on a left turn. About 4 or 5 rapid pops. It won't make any sound if I turn the wheel to full lock while stationary.

I have also noticed I get the noise more on a wider axis turn. If I turn tight right or left into the nearest perpendicular lane (e.g., a normal sharp right turn or left turn into a one way street) I usually get no noise. If I make a normal left turn across one lane, or if I turn wide right straight into the passing lane, I tend to get the noise.

oooolala!
Birf attack time!

Wasn't there a rumor a while back that cv unlimited was having this problem with all of their birfs, and that they were easily breaking?

LandToy, No offense, but shouldn't you expect that since that's what is in there? There is a trade-off with after market birfs.

Here is the reason your newfileds are clicking!

The larger wear spot is the drive side of the birfield inner star, while the smaller worn section is the coast / reverse side of the birfield.

When the Birf is turned the ball gets stuck / caught / pinched between the wear spots and the corresponding wear mark in the birfield cut & inner cage

You will have to examine the newfield to see how much wear is present. If it is really worn, then there is the chance that the pinched / bound ball will break the inner cage!

Yowsa... don't care for that kind of wear on what should be a stronger and longer lasting part! Material problem! Also, what type of grease did you use with that? I read an article years back about Porsche 930 Turbo race cars wearing out CV joints... until they switched to some super expensive grease. It is used for bearings and such in very high heat steel smelting/processing equipment. Crazy expensive, but if it does the job....

FYI, 86 - 92 Supra outer CV joints are a great source for inner parts. The outer bell/cup is different due to the semi floating design, but all the internals will swap into an 80 cup.

It has been my understanding based on info provided from this board, that when you get the birf's strengthened the process actually makes the metal softer which allows it to wear more quickly but at the same time keeps them from snapping as quickly. The 80 being full-time 4wd means it wears them out faster than stock.

but aren't newfields made to last longer (ie less ductile)?

Warthog,is that Newfields or OEM birfields? My OEM ones with 208k mi looked like that.
I got a E-mail from CVUnlimited
"KURT, I AM NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS IF IT IS THE NEWFIELDS IT WILL GET
WORSE AS IT WEARS MORE. IF IT GET TO THE POINT YOU WANT TO CHANGE THEM WE
WILL GLADLY REPLACE THEM AS LONG AS THEY ARE BAD.

THANKS

GEORGE STUCKEY"

I will, when it gets warm out, pull one and see what it looks like.
