this has probably been answered before, but anyways here it goes,a relative is offering me his old '88 land cruiser for 500 bucks, drivers side door rotted, needs a battery and thermostat, but otherwise seems like a really nice rig.Anyways, my question is, it states in the owners manual for it that it supposedly has levers to actuate front and rear lockers. Neither my relative nor myself can seem to find anything resembling these. Was it some kind of option, or where did toyota hide the damn things?

No factory lockers that I know of on a fj62 (usa) maybe the manual is for a later model? $500. is hard to beat even for a rust bucket, but beware..these things aren't cheap to maintain or run...You'd be better off to buy a running rig form some non-relative then buy a money pit.

Sound like your relative is out for some inbreeding..don't let him/her screw you by selling you a parts truck when you got no other rig to move parts to...

You need to do some searches on this board about fj62s. I

f the door is rusted..so is lots of other stuff....look at athe frame and the shocks the inside of the rear 1/4 panels. No cure for rust cancer but $$$.

not to be a spoil sport..but hey, you asked

has anyone on here ever swapped the lockers in,is it possible to do?

im going to tell you before anyone else can, and im going to be nice about it...

There is a search funtion on the top tool bar of the site. It is a huge help when looking for things. Being a newbie(as far as LCs are concerned) it has helped me greatly, piece of advice....use the advanced search to limit you queries so you don't end up with 4000+ hits most of which will probably be in "The ultimate thread" down in Chit Chat, stay out of there......

ROTWs(Rig of the weeks) are very useful if you find one that is set up the way you want it to be just look at the way they set theirs up and go from there.

If you save some money by using info from this site its nice to help woody out by purchasing a silver star. I don't have one yet so im a hypocrite but the silver star helps woody keep the site going.

oh yeah, welcome to the site.

About your possible 60.......i just found a 60 series for free and it has "some" rust issues. The motor runs great and the drive train is solid but there are rust issues. For 500 dollars if it runs great you can take the good parts off and sell them but it will be "some" work.

In the end just decide what, and how much, you are willing to spend on it.

if a new thermostat and a battery will get it roadworthy then buy it. you could be driving a legend for about 600 bucks. who knows, you might just get hooked like the rest of us.

i'd save the money you plan on spending on lockers and get the rust taken care of. then drive it and wait and see what repairs pop up next. seems like "new to us" rigs always have mechanical issues.

double check the extent of the rust then buy it!

good luck.
