Hi, newbie with a problem that I can't resolve with FAQ, Tech links, etc. as it appears I have outsmarted myself. The junk is a 78 FJ 40 sitting on a 77 frame purchased a year ( or so) ago. Good price, good basic mechanicals, strong 2F, new 33X12.5, winch, recently rolled with a rusty tub, P.O. not much for details. Originally (not knowing much about 40's, except that at some point I HAD to have one), thought about a restore, but after a bit of study realised that this one was not a good canidate. SO, a trail rig! A lot of great trails close. This winter was chase leaks, fix linkages, replace boots, gaskets, fluids, hoses, etc., etc.. and resolve a bunch of problems with the help of MUD.

After realising the back drums were not working( frozen cylinders), I decided to go disc-o. Got the parts( thanks Poser for turned rotors:)) and while at it, why not a lunchbox Aussie in the rear? Everything is here, I drain and pop the diff and lo and behold, then ass end is already locked! Having never driven a locker ( or LC ) before I don't feel completely stupid, but pretty close:doh:. Maybe that's why she did the herky-jerky sometimes in slow pavement turns!

So, after this lame and belated intro, who can identify the locker I have and please tell me where to learn how to get the C clips off and reinstalled after I stumble thru the disc conversion? Thanks in advance for being patient:beer:
P.S. What should I do with the Aussie sitting on the kitcen counter?- it does fit the front???

Looks like a Valu-lok to me...

Lock-rite.

You have to remove the cross shaft (which you have), and then rotate the locker assembly and remove those little spring assemblies and pins from the body of the locker. A very small flat-tipped screwdriver works well for this. Be mindful to keep the springs under control, or you will be looking for them around the shop. You then can remove one side of the locker and then the other, and then remove the c-clips.

Your ‘other’ locker will work in the front.

there is a great writeup in the tech section about putting them in.

Thanks for the info Poser.I wasn't sure how similiar the different brands are.

I have the Aussie info from MUD printed up already.

And yes, the locker is tlaking and LAUGHING at me.

Thanks guys.

Not to beat a dead horse, should I send the Aussie back or stick it in the front? I KNOW this is covered ad nauseum, but opinions are like you now what and free advice is worth what you pay for it so----

If you want the front locked up, then install it and call it good.

If not, toss it on the shelf, and see if you want the front locked later, and you will have it if you do.

What do you plan on doing with this truck?

Pounding rocks?

Trail rides?

Dirt roads?

?????

IF its going to be a trail rig, put it in.

This truck will end up doing everything. It will need to road to Moab, Telluride, Canyonlands, etc and go wherever it ends up. And more importantly, get the better half home as promised:p

I guess I'm looking for everything- aren't we all?
Seriously, I don't know how far into the radical 4 wheeling I will go- but I intend to find out-as they say God hates a coward!

I think you should just send it to me, it sounds like to much work to install it in the front... Ha Ha.. I will even pay for shipping.

Chuck, thanks for the offer. Now I have another option:bounce:
