Hey,

I have been given full control over my dad's FJ60. It's time to give it the attention it deserves! He bought it in '86 and it's in great overall condition. Minor rust on rear fenders, typical sagging suspension, about 180,000 miles, 30x950 tires, awesome potential!

I just bought the OME kit today and plan to do the install this weekend. I have read many posts with great input, but I want to make sure I haven't missed anything extra useful to speed up the process. Any tips are much appreciated.

I ordered some BFG A/T's 33x950 R15, as I wanted to keep the stock wheels for now. Discount Tire said the BFG 1050's are discontinued, so I figured I better get the 950's in case I ever need one replaced. Will I like the 950's for all around use and some weekend off roading, or will they be too narrow?

I am new to all this so I am just wanting to do some basic improvements. I plan to take the FJ on ski trips, to my cabin, and off roading in Moab and other UT trails. I hope to move up to bigger tires/lift in the future when I get a 350 and the 5spd. All in due time and money...;)

Thanks for any input and recommendations! I will post more questions as I dive into the project! :wrench:

I like that color. Welcome to MUD. Now drop your wallet and run. Run as fast as you can and don't look back, if you do you will be sucked into the Land Cruiser Vortex and you and your wallet will NEVER escape.

I'm too am a rookie, though I'm at least as old your dad, probably older. I am in the same state of mind as you are with my 85 FJ60, which I've owned since new. My wife thinks I've got arrested development! In any event, I relate to the enthusiasm in your voice. Best wishes! And by the way, your sense of excitement, passion, and mission come through very clearly in your very well-expressed post. Regards, N.M.

You've got a lift, got some tires, now the next best thing you could do to make this more capable off road would be a locker.

This what UT does to an FJ60. So I recommend rust prevention.

Welcome! Nice cruiser. Looks like you will have have fun. Put some aussie lockers on the rear. And tint the windows for sure. Here are my two utah native cruisers!

Dynosaur, it may already be too late for him! :crybaby:

Tall and skinny is the way to go (unless you run in sand).

I'm running 10.50's on my 60 and they need to be replaced soon. Hope they are still available.

Welcome.

It is already happening! I am spinning inside the vortex and there is no way out. I like your vivid description! It is true to the utmost. I already looked back, so...what do I do now!?:)

Thanks for welcoming me into "The Cruiser Vortex"!

Thanks for all your responses already! I will post more pics after the install.

Any thoughts on how to reduce the CO emissions? It has failed twice now, even after I did a basic tune-up. The second time it was worse!! It has a new exhaust/catalytic, plugs, wires, and dist cap. I checked the PCV valve and changed the grommet. The idle is running about 1500-1800 RPMs when hot. My next step is to check out the carb, but we already had a shop overhaul it last year. I also used a gas treatment twice. Any other things to check out?

Thanks again!

Yep, go propane! And get it paid for by the state while you can.....

Or just try 1/8 tank of E85 before you try again. There is a fuel up in Draper.

Enjoy your new rig. The 33 x 9.50s are excellent tires for both on and off road; I have run them for a couple of years now and love them. Not sure what to tell you about the emissions stuff...

Learn to work on this truck yourself and it won't be the big expense that people say it is. Taking it to a shop to have work done is what costs the big money. Once you learn to maintain the 2F engine, it will take good care of you.

Dude I was all excited like you when I bought my 82 FJ60. I am almost 32 and have wanted one since I can remember. I finally bought bought one and 2 weeks later the wiper motor went out. Between wiper motor and new wiper links Specter Off-Road got almost $500 out of my wallet. Not to mention hours of trimming rust and cutting diamond plate to cover the holes plus my custom rustoleum paint job and Ford Ranger mirror conversion (the stock mirrors were too small and useless) That was last year, this year is a TBI 350 swap and a spring over lift............. a Fuel injected 350 would fix your 2F emission problems.
