So. Is the Jemez the popular choice? If so, let's do it. I don't have chains, but I do have a skinny pedal and ain't 'fraid to use her!

I would expect there could be money to make off of rescuing unprepared (ahem) "cidiots".

Like the family we help a few years back in a domestic crossover SUV with skinny wall city tires that was a few miles deep off of the highway. Didn't even know what the "sand" button did on the dash board and that he should use it. :bang:

Went to Caja Del Rio and poked around to find an old camp spot today and made it all the way to a spot across the rio from the Frijoles Falls in Bandelier. I was pushing snow with my bumper in spots but never really had much issue getting 4R go. Biggest problem was dealing with the ruts we couldn't see. After another snow it would be pretty deep!

Nice pic of the canyon/bandalier, Steve. It's beautiful with the layer of white on top. Your post makes me miss the days of running up La Bajada, across the plateau, past the sinkhole, and over to Diablo/Buckman.

It's not likely that I'll be able to make the New Years Day run, but I'm keeping an eye on the plan just in case.

 This year has topped them all as far as quantity. It was fun at first... not so much anymore. Multiple in a day for several days is a bit much for our volunteer FD. Minivans. Slippers and pajama pants being the warmest clothes they have. Lots of people who have never seen snow in rental cars deciding a mountain drive would be fun. One even admitted they heard a blizzard was coming and thought it would be "neat" to experience.

I need to make sure my chains fit; got stuck today but got out with my knock-off maxtrax (I have a new bumper to pay for). Bit concerned I won't make clearance though; my spare is mounted below.

I say we do the Jemez! Lets do this folks!

Has anybody kept track of who might be joining? Perhaps post up or update the first thread's note, so we can see the trucks, who has chains, needs chains etc?

Definitely In, trying to source chains. Not a scared. 0930 Walatowa?

I have no chains for the 4Runner. Ya walatowa 9:30 cool!!! I’d rather spend more time wheeling than rescuing people though.
@Manona do you have a suggested route? If we come out through Cuba I may drive the pickup instead of towing 4Runner

I am in and just got chains. I'll do a test fit tonight when I get home. Jemez is great for me! Brock will come with. I may let him drive some if it isn't super tough. ;)

Jill may come and bring snowshoes for when we get stuck. we have a sled too for some sliding fun.

Figures! We’re stuck in FL until Wed - have fun. Last time we had snow like this up there was the 2016 run.

I now have chains. Thanks a bunch RON!

Frank and I will work to get to Walatowa by 930. Just a bit concerned if we get dumped on in the valley tonight. Conditions may make the schelp to the Jemez a challenge itself. We will evaluate the conditions in the morning and post up.

I agree - don't really want to spend the day rescuing. Don't mind the occasional strap or push to help somebody but lets get deep into the bush where we will find less opportunity for rescues!

Lets do this!

any thoughts on roads lower down to try out? maybe over by Ponderosa?

I don't have chains and didn't find any the couple of places I stopped at today.

Like Bionic said there is Ponderosa area that we have done in the past...but it maybe be really deep by now as well? I guess better chance there than up another 1k in elevation. I'm would think trails around Cabezon could be an option for less snow but enough to have fun.

EDIT:
This more or less represents my stock 4R (in my head) but I'd rather not spend 6 hours driving 1/4 mile or rescuing half of ABQ.

Hey guys, I was up on 126 by 144 at 3:00 today after a call for someone who got stuck 10 miles in back there... there was over 12" new on 126 and some of the FD actually just went in and got the people out on snowmobiles because it was snowing heavily and didn't want to risk getting the wildland truck stuck in a drift, especially with more snow to come. I won't be heading out tomorrow; l've had my fill with battling snow this past week just getting from point a to b and not sure I have the clearance with the spare where it is (can't wait for the new bumper!). I think they're supposed to get another 10" at least up there.

Down low- Ponderosa or even 485/376 may be a better choice than up high. I haven't heard any updates on the roads/snowfall in the past hour.

Cheryl, thanks for the report from the Great White North! Sorry you won't be able to join us but certainly understand, snow gets old quick! Stay warm, dry and Happy New Year!

((DREAM RIG!!!))
I think Cabezon may be a better choice, honestly. I think the Ponderosa road will be pretty bad not too far up the road as it gains elevation fairly quick.
Sorry I don't have better beta!

If it was going to be sunny out, I'd be in, honestly! But I'm done with even potentially digging in blizzard conditions! Happy New Year and have fun, wherever you guys go!

Hope y'all have a great time today. We got another 8" last night so I will be playing around the house. Be safe!

Snowing hard in N Rio Rancho. My rarely heard inner common sense voice tells me it's a pretty poor choice to go to the Jemez. What does the masses say? Traffic cams up this way show everything snow packed. I can't imagine they are better anywhere North of here.

I'm for staying around the ABQ area or at least low in elevation.

I'd say we either change destinations or break into two groups if there are still some folks wanting to head to the Jemez mountains.

Puerco or Placitas BLM or....something else I'd be game for.
