So I'm thinking about modding the new truck and can't decide what should be done first. I've thought about a set of BFG ATs, but after checking the stock tires, they look fairly agressive, Toyota rates them for mud and snow on the website. They are 16" now, and I can go up to 18" without a lift, but will probably be too tight without the lift.

So I'm thinking about a different suspension, lockers, sliders, bumpers, etc, but can't decide which, or even know which should come before others. I'm also thinking I should run it stock for a while in order to put some use on all the new stuff before replacing it.

Have you done all your preventive maintenace? If so I'd go suspension first then tires.

LOL, look at his sig line. I think he's talking about that rig.

I'd look into a good suspension kit first for the added clearance and flex. Then go from there.

I haven't even done my first oil change...lol.

What do you guys like for suspensions? ARB, OME? I definately do some research, but like others opinions too.

OME is ARB, they make a good suspension. If you can, I would stay away from the run of the mill fabtech/skyjacker type of stuff. A lot of those widely advertised kits are good if all you want is lift. If you want a quality offroad suspension you would do well with OME springs and Bilstien shocks. When my OME shocks wear out, I will go with Bilstiens. :cheers:
 
I think I mostly want it for the off-road suspension and a tiny lift, 2" max, in order to give me more options for tires in the future, although I think 18" may be the biggest I want in the future.

The truck will be mostly a DD for my wife, but I do want to give it a bit more muscle than stock so we can comfortably and safely wheel it monthly or quartly at the least without tearing it up.

I grew up camping a ton and wheeling a lot with my uncles, so I'm easing my wife and daughters (8 and 3) into an outdoor life. So far we have the new truck, a recently purchased Old Town canoe and a regularly upgrading stock of camping gear. So that's basically a good look at what I plan to do with the truck, easy to moderate trails mostly, enough to keep my girls interested and entertained without scaring them too much...grin.

Seems to me that 18" Tires might be a bit small... unless you like the lowrider look! ;)

Hmm...I guess I posted that wrong. :flipoff2: I think I meant 18" wheels, obviously the tires are bigger than 18"...grin...I don't think I could make it up the slope in my driveway with 18" tires. ;)

What type/size are the stock wheels?
 
Didn't think to look at the actual size on the tire, but the tire and wheel measure 30" together.
 
PM FirstToy you can find him in the 80's section search - he knows a ton about runners and had an 03 fully lifted and modded

also I believe he went with Donahoe coilovers
 
Are your stock wheels steel or alloy? The Toyota alloys are high quality forgings to equal the factory quality in an aftermarket wheel your going to spend a bunch of $$$. If your thinking larger rim, for offroad the shorter sidewall will reduce traction and ride quality, also increase the chances of rim damage.

Cool, thanks for the info, here is what came with the truck: 16-in. 6-spoke aluminum alloy wheels with P265/70R16 tires. I'll probably run the tires for a while and see how they do. I'd rather get some use out of the stock parts since it's all brand new...grin.
