New Toyota Oil Filter and Rattle on Startup - Update!

I am convinced my start up rattle is a little worse with the new small oil filters the dealers now sell (the new cheap one). Can anyone recommend a good alternative to this filter? I read through some of the old posts and C-Dan says the old larger filter is still available. With this one being larger, will it be of any help with the startup rattle?

Thanks

Andrew

I have and use the large filter suggested by C-Dan. There's still some rattle, but not as much as with the crappy small one. I'd go with C-Dan's recommendation.

15600-41010, that's currently what I have installed on LX and I don't hear any rattle. I have an Amsoil 5W30 synthetic in the crankcase with 2000 miles log on the oil and still no rattle.

I'll get shot down for not using Toyota filters, but i really like either the napa gold or the mobil 1 filters. That's what i use. I have start-up rattle no matter what filter and what weight or brand oil i use. So i just deal with it.

I think the key is to use a filter with an anti-drain back valve. I use Wix, which I think is the same thing as the Napa Golds.

That rattle is just the engine's teeth chattering when its cold. Just like on us humans, it does no harm. That is what I tell myself. But seriously, I think everyone's does it to some degree, so I don't think it's that big of a deal.

what kind of rattle is that, what does it sound like?

i just installed a purolator pure one ( small version ) w/ delo 400 15w-40 and it totally got rid of the startup rattle. when getting the filter, i noticed the book listed two numbers. one was the bigger sized filter. i got the small one because it was closer to the filter that was on there when i got it. i think they both had the anti-drain back valve so the next change will see the larger one fitted.
(here in so-cal, it's not even cold in the morning so the thicker oil should be ok. right?)

ADBV only keeps oil from flowing out the inlet of the filter (many small holes), does nothing to keep the filter from draining out the outlet (big center hole with threads) even if the ADBV holds the filter can still be more than half empty on start.

Robbie has reported some success reducing/eliminating the start up rattle with enlargement of the oil hole in the timing chain tensioner, getting the start up RPM down if yours goes very high will also help, (clean TB and or o-ring trick)

Mine only does it when I disconnect the battery, first start after that it revs on start and sometimes rattles (nasty sound)

No rattle at all in mine, but when I go to the dealer today for an oil filter I'm going to get the larger filter, thanks for the tip guys.

Raven, this may be stupid, and i could search, but.......i'm about to do the valve cover gasket and such. Is the oil hole something i could enlarge while the valve cover is off, or is it deeper than that?

No rattle at all in mine either, using 0W40, even when cold no rattle, just as another data point, ohh, using OEM 20004 filters (til about 2015! :D )

One real quirky thing happen this last oil change on my engine is that I decided to finally put in my oil pressure relief spring in this 93 engine(engine rebuilt a little over 30 k miles ago). Well I had some times a rattle with the 20004 filter and 0-40 Mobil one oil. I have no long term results yet, but the first 3k miles no rattle what so ever on start up. So the combo I have currently is 20004 filter, drilled tensioner hole (.040 "), new oil pressure relief spring (15132-66020), Mobil one 0-40 syn oil. I was going to report this later after the second oil change, but heck your pressure releif spring may need to be changed. Maybe the oil is so think that it is pushing the releif spring out of the way and not filling up stuff as quick. any how it is really a cheap experement 3-4 dollars for the spring or less depending on where you get it, results may vary with use. Dan are you ready for the orders. later robbie

NAPA as alt. filter

I currently use NAPA (Wix) Gold 1515- a big filter, $5+ and appears to be designed well and materially of very high quality. Otherwise I slowly use up my remaining cache of 20004- only 2 left (@ $10 ea)and saving for a "special" day.

The tensioner externally accessible on the right side of the timing cover, have not done this myself you would have to search for Robbies other post’s for the details

Did you replace the spring for the relief valve at the both the pump and oil cooler?

I just came back from the dealer and I was given a 90915-YZZD3 for an oil filter. I asked him to look for a 15600-41010 and was told that Toyota no longer makes this filter. My ? is, is the YZZD3 ok for this application?

I started to get this rattle after my truck blew that 3" piece of heater hose between the block and firewall and spewed coolant all over the highway. Ever since then I get rattle at start-up no matter what oil filter I use. I've tried OEM, Bosch, Mobil 1, and K&N. I don't recall mine rattling before the heater hose incident. That might be because ever since then I pay a lot more attention to what my Cruiser is doing. Paranoid!

If by "okay" you mean will it filter oil until next change, the answer is yes. I personally don't care for that filter nor do I use it. I believe it to be Toyota's attempt to compete with the Jiffy Lubers of the world and offer a cost-competitive product - nothing wrong with that. Many on this board use "alternative" filters such as NAPA Gold/WIX and Mobil, et al. Do a search on this sight and clear an afternoon - there's so much info to read and digest. HTH. Tom
