Just got some new oem shocks from the dealer. Maybe you shouldn't but the first thing I do after unboxing is compress them by hand to see how they feel. I notice that one of the fronts will compress about three or four inches very easy until the valving seems to engage oil and then it is much stiffer. The other front shock only started behaving the same after I cycled it a couple of times. The rear is stiff through all of its travel. Did I just ruin my shocks or is this normal operation?

May have something to do with laying around on a shelf and/or being shipped. Shocks are usually designed to function vertically oriented. Consequently, maybe it took a couple of cycles to "get in the groove." If they're both responsive now, I wouldn't expect a persistent issue.

I've been playing with stock shocks lately and noticed the very same thing after laying them horizontal.
Run em.
Tell us what a new stock shock feel like compare to the old ones...
