Hey y’all, my name is Logan. I’m a PA student in the Upstate of South Carolina and I just got my first Land Cruiser! It’s. 1999 black/tan with locking rear diff and 220k miles. I love medicine, guns, being outdoors and now Land Cruisers! I’m looking forward to working on this truck and making it my dd & our family adventure truck and I’m also looking forward to sharing the adventure with y’all.

Welcome to the ultimate addiction! If you've got the factory rear locker then you've got the front locker too.
no front locker ever offered. just weak 2 pinion carrier for those years.

Thanks guys, I’m not much into forums in general but I’m assuming this will an invaluable resource as I build this truck out to what I have envisioned. Only issue the truck has is the sun roof didn’t work and leaked (disconnected power source and silicones it shut) and then I realized the windshield was leaking also at the top around the map light housing. I just silicones that off and fingers crossed that took care of the issue. What mod would y’all recommend I do first? I was thinking tires + suspension/lift. Those seem to be the most practical right off the bat.

First mods
Heater tees
865 Old man emu rear springs for 2” lift
Crank front T bars
McMaster bands on cv boots
285/75/16 tires (I would personally go 295/75/16)
Alignment
Conceal carry holster via victory4x4 console mole or wits end console organizer
Remove running boards / steps
Remove mud flaps
Rear cargo area attic rack
Recovery points (2 front and hitch rear)
Replace speaker foam
If no Factory nav then an apple play touch screen

All pretty Inexpensive and DYI mods that you’ll use and enjoy

Welcome to the mud! And congrats on finding a nice example. Depending upon how it has been taken care of - I will hold off on the mods and plan on taking care of any deferred maintenance. If you are willing to get your hands dirty (and have some time to invest) you will save major bucks on labor. If you take it in for service - beware of run-of-the-mill shops who will create more issues than solve them. That's just the nature of the beast unfortunately.

Parts prices range from surprisingly affordable to you-gotta-be-shi++ing-me expensive.
The leaky windshield is typically due to bad glass installation - hopefully you don't have rust around the frame. Find a local installer and give them a copy of the windshield install pages to take it off and install it properly.

Check if any of these have been done recently: (all prices are for parts only)
Timing Belt - About $500 + $700 in labor
CV Axle (only is they are leaking) - $900
Rear control arms: $700
Front upper control arm $700
Front lower ball joints: $100
Shocks: $200 for all four Toyota originals!!
Front wheel bearings: $250
Brake rotors and pads: $600
Driveline fluids/grease: $150

Things that go bad around this mileage (bonus if it has taken care of already): Steering rack, tie rod ends, Brake booster assembly ($2000 to $3000 repair :crybaby: ), rear AC lines if there is rust.

So plan for around $5000 in maintenance and tires in the first year of ownership (unless of course some of these were taken care of by the prev. owner).

As for the mods - I always suggest driving it for a while before deciding what you actually want from your truck. No point in lifting it and adding big tires if that if that is not the intended use!

I'm in Greenville too and have just started to baseline my 2001 with 260k.

Did you pick yours up in Georgetown, S.C. ?

Thanks for the suggestions! Timing belt was done at 195k, cv axles aren’t leaking, brakes were done just before I bought the truck, all the electrical works inside minus the CD player & sunroof, I listened for any brake booster issues and didn’t hear any (whatever that’s worth haha), four wheel drive and rear locker work great, fluids were all topped off. Other than that I’m not even sure how to check the other things you mentioned haha. I’m in graduate school so money is tight-ish but I definitely can make time to wrench on it on my own so that’s no problem.

medicine, guns, being outdoors and now Land Cruisers

What medicine do you recommend before going outdoors in your landcruiser with your guns? Asking for a friend.

:flipoff2: Welcome to Mud, please empty your wallet at the door.....
