Hello mud! Trying to return to the land cruiser family after many years of trouble free 100 series ownership.

After watching the 200 series market nearly daily for over a year I think we're finally close to pulling the trigger on a 2019 white/terra 45k miles for $65k @ CarMax. Goal was to get either a CPO or next best was CarMax with their warranty. Car lived in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. Clean title. Excellent condition.

Anyway, purpose of this post is 2 fold, possibly tracking down previous owner to know why they sold (kdss bolts coated in fluid film or the likes so figured that might just be a mud member thing) and had a couple questions about aftermarket Pilkington windshield.

Noticed the windshield is a replacement. While not entirely bad, the windshield trim is all jacked up. Broken clips, missing plastic pins and clips where weather stripping was removed for the install, etc... I can't tell how new the install is but I'm worried PO may have unloaded this rig due to water issues.

I've got 10 days to reverse the sale if needed.

I plan on pulling some trim pieces, front kick panels, under dash covers and soak the truck with a hose for a while and see if I find any water. Just super paranoid after reading countless horror stories from bad windshield installs and all the headaches that go along with that.

Anyway, looking forward to getting involved in the community again in the near future!

Congrats on the new truck!

The glass on itself is not a problem. Many prefer OEM glass (I'm surprised insurance did not approve OEM glass for such an expensive truck; maybe it was a crappy insurance), but Pilkington is a good brand. Used to be made in Italy (original on many Volvos) but the replacements we get now days are likely to be made in Mexico.

No matter the glass the issue is the install and as you noticed already there are some visible issues. If you want peace of mind just reinstall the windshield at a competent shop. The glass is made to be reinstalled. You may need to order some of the mangled parts like the trims but they are not expensive relatively speaking.

Problem with a poor install is that it may not fail now (the garden hose applied at the cowl test) but in time when you completely forgot about it. Can you get a discount on the price due to the poor install and the potential of major damage as documented multiple times on mud? Then use the money to reinstall it.

Very nice! Mine came with a replaced windshield, also.

welcome
nice truck

i have 287 k miles on mine - oem windshield still, unlike my FJC which needs windshield yearly …

If you don't find out the story, I'd still not judge the panel install by the trim condition. Gluing the panel in is pretty much the same process on most windshields, but they may be forced to deal with dozens of different systems for trim. Meaning they would have had much more practice doing the part that introduces water if it's not done right.

Not that you shouldn't investigate.. just saying.

Also if you haven't already get a sunroof drain cleaner tool and use that once a year. Leaks from the sunroof drain tray getting overwhelmed seem far more common in our platform.

Did a lengthy water test last night, no obvious signs of water intrusion.

@doru agreed, the install seems to be a little sloppy so that leaves a lot of questions. Also agreed on possible failure over time, especially with this truck moving from the south to Midwest where it'll see lots of freeze thaw cycles.

@bloc found one of your old posts with part numbers for clips. That was huge, many thanks!

Attached are pix of the mangled clips, previously glued to body channel then painted over. There's now a nice unpainted area where the clips had pulled up and were barely holding on to the weatherstripping.

Outside of this issue the truck seems pretty mint so far...

Enjoy! They are lovely vehicles.

That's a broken clip. I saw bent clips but not a broken one. Needs new clip and the special glue. Or better the job redone. Who knows what else was not done right.

Truck looks good. Fix it and enjoy it!

Most installers will put urethane under that clip. FSM specifies a flexible epoxy. I may have put the brand I used in that old post, but whether I used it is holding up very well six years later.

Each side molding piece is held on by 4 plastic clips and 2 metal clips. ALL clips, and the side molding, are intended to be one time use. However, these pieces are all commonly reused which isn't always ideal as you are experiencing.

I wouldn't freak out about broken clips or mangled molding. Just fix/replace and you'll be all good.

I would bet that the used car dealer was the one that replaced the windshield, not previous owner. (Locally, Toyota charges around $2k for new OEM windshield on LC.).

When i trade in my Honda Ridgeline, it had a cracked windshield. The very next week, when i came back to dealer, it had a new windshield (aftermarket of course).

I might pull and reinstall windshield for peace of mind, but I wouldn't be overly concerned if you don't have any gremlins and you didn't see any signs of trouble with the garden hose.

As a quick follow up, I went ahead and replaced all the clips and weatherstripping. Turned out perfect. The stripping sits exactly as it should and makes nice uniform contact with the glass.

I used a flexible epoxy from total boat for the metal clips. Might be the same that @bloc used in the past. Also, on the metal clips know they are directional. They have a faint arrow pressed into them, arrow faces forward.

Only tricky part is getting the white plastic clips off their studs. You DO NOT want to break these studs so be careful there.

First post mentions issue followed up with the potential to reverse sale because of said issue.

Second post, the very next day you’re already taking things apart.

Follow up, spent money and fixed issue.

You’re going to fit in nicely with the 200 series mud crowd, it’s a loss for the 100 series section.

I’m looking forward to seeing your new bumper and wheel/tire combo!

Lol, in fairness I didn't start replacing anything until the warranty period expired.

At this point we're obviously giving it a shot, hopefully things work out. PO seemed to by a cruiser fan, they looked to have owned an 80 as well. They did little things like coat the kdss valve block in fluid film so I know they cared. But was never able to find out why they sold.

Put about 1k miles on the truck in a week. Seems solid so fingers crossed!

Don't plan on bumpers but will likely get ko3s to replace the original tires that came on the truck. May go down the slider path at some point as well.

If we guess the car on the lift above it, in post #15, do we get a prize?

Reflection on the cruiser windshield clearly shows 3 header tubes dropping downward out of a cylinder head.

Pcar indeed.
