Hey guys I just want to say thanks for all the great info on here. I have been trolling on here for months learning. I come from the world of FJ 40, 55, 60 and hilux. I was shopping for a long time for an FZJ80 and never had any plans of getting a 100, much less a LX470. However, I never found the FZJ80 that I was looking for and came across a good deal for a great LX470. Naturally, the wife loved the LX over any 80 series I was looking at. So I thought it would be fun to do an LX build. I plan on using this both as a DD and a Overlanding rig that I can take the kids on some off roading adventures. Originally, I wanted dual lockers, but I think I can get away with one ARB.

She has 160k on her and the timing belt was done about 150 miles ago. There were good maintenance records, though not complete. First thing is I want to get this rid baselined. I have so many questions I don't know where to start. So I will just start off with my most pressing concern. I can't find any proof that the fluid in the transmission has been changed, which concerns me. She drives perfectly and shows no signs of any transmission issues. So naturally I thought I would change the fluid right away. However, a friend of mine who is a Ford Mechanic told me not to change the fluid. He said if it has never been changed it would be very likely that some sort of debris would become loose and screw up the transmission, if I were to change the fluid. He claims he has seen this happen many times, but again he sees fords. So I want get some feedback from the MUD experts on here as what would be best.

Thanks Guys!!!!

Sorry if the pics suck. I took them on an iPad.

Nice score! Congrats on the purchase

Nice pickup!

But with a screen name like that, we need more pics showing how you plan to pack some heat in that rig!

^This. :p

She's a dead ringer for my LX, :princess: will love it.

And I'd change the fluid. Simple change takes right around 4 qts. Lots of info in the 100 series FAQ.

Lightweight Officers' in console, FAL Para on floor in back.

Well it will be some time before I can get the ARB in her, but I hope to have that done by the end of the year. In the meantime she will be locked and loaded in a different way with a Walther PPQ sitting in the center console.

That's was my thought as well. As I really prefer to run Amsoil for all my gear oils. I was just concerned because my mechanic friend was telling me not to do so.

I did a transmission fluid exchange on my FZJ80 with no problems. But everything I read scared me on doing that to my 2005 LX so I just had the Lexus dealer do a drain and fill but mine uses the WS fluid and its a sealed system. Another concern I had with my 2005 was that moisture is a major concern with the WS fluid but since I live in Vegas and the humid level here is about Zero did not think it would be a problem. If you do a complete exchange just make sure you do your research and don't use any additives/cleaners.

Nice looking school bus. ;)
It needs a bar, snorkel etc to make it look right.
You will not regret this.

was this a local score? what was the price if you dont mind me asking?

Yeah it was local. I got it for 11k. Plus, the t-belt and water pump were done 200 miles ago. It's never been off road. Underneath is so clean it crazy. It's in unreal shape.

Does your '05 LX takes WS fluid and what the heck is a sealed system? Mine is an '09, so are there any differences between the years in how their transmission fluid is changed?

Thanks

No dipstick, WS fluid stands for World Service, started use in the 100 series in 2004. It's suppose to be a lifetime fill but no fluid is lifetime. Is not compatible with other trans fluid.

I don't remember what it is called. The PO told me but I forgot. I thought it was a dark metallic silver, but when you see it in person there is a lite hint of brown in it. It's not a bad color.

As I posted above, yours looks paint and trim-wise just like mine...paint color code is 8P9.
