Hey Guys, I've been in the FJ60 world for about a year. Love my current rig, but looking to add a 100 series daily driver.

I've read up on AHC, the slee 100 seres buyer guide, and all the changes to the 06 models.

This 2006 popped up yesterday with 95K miles, at what I feel is a pretty decent price compared to others I've seen $19,995.

The rig does have AHC, and the timing belt and water pump haven't been changed. The front bumper is being fixed also.

Here is the Cars.com listing and the CarFax Report.

Lastly, I'm looking at buying the rig sight unseen. I've tried to read up on everything I should ask about, but is there anything less than obvious that I can ask over the phone to get a good idea?

I appreciate all the answers, you guys really helped me with my FJ60 purchase as well!!

I would recommend getting some undercarriage pics as well. Living it's life in MN and IL could have done some damage. Also ask for pics of other common rust areas i.e. Windshield, tail gate. I can say our 05 that has lived in the Midwest it's whole life is pretty damn clean underneath and had the rust prevention done when new so that defiantly helped.

I requested some this afternoon, but thanks for the heads up It's something that needs to be double checked.

The last midwest 2006 I looked at looked like swiss cheese from rust. I looked at 4 others and they were all some degree of bad on the rust side. For whatever reason my 2005 looked much better.

Areas to check:
Bottom of upper tailgate area, around license plate lights
Sunroof perimeter
Bottom pinch weld of lower tailgate (open gate and lift plastic cover to inspect), seam sealer separation
Windshield, all around
Passenger wheel well- front and particularly behind mudflap area on passenger side- that drop panel behind the mudflap gets filled with salt and crap from both the taillight gasket and wherever else.
Driver wheel well- front and back edges
Underside of rear floor panels, lower spare to inspect fully
Body drop panels on both rear corners
Rear bumper reinforcement piece, this turns to swiss cheese from exhaust gasses + road salt
Rear portion of front fenders generally get filled with leaves and crap, visible through door
Bottom pinch weld on all 4 doors

Now, most rust can be fixed/stopped/remediated so it's not a "walk away" deal unless you're not willing to address it. It's just important to be aware of and use potentially in negotiations. Figure it took 10 years to get that far, it'll take another 10 at least to take the truck out of commission!

With the limited service records from Carfax, you might want to register on the Toyota owners site and put in the VIN to see if any dealer service shows up.

any update @pateshu

Not yet, the dealership is replacing and painting the front bumper currently then going through the service department.

I should get pictures monday/tuesday.

I'm travling to Oklahoma City on Tuesday and plan on looking at a couple LC's at Thoroughbred Motors. Two rigs out of CA and TX. Higher miles, but I'm going to bet ZERO rust.

Negotiate cash for the bumper repair and put it into ARB/Slee/BIOR/Dissent

Deal fell through, someone else picked it up before they even called me saying it was out of the shop.

Moving on.

Found this tonight, looks really clean, single owner, CA Car, but ZERO service records on CarFax or Toyota Owners Site.

Does that seem crazy?

It's the Color and Year I would prefer, but the service makes me go Ehh?

I'm tired of deals slipping through the cracks though.

I'm not surprised the first one sold before you had a chance. The starting price was to sell fast.

Well i'm learning that I need to jump fast.

But without service records thats kinda strange I plan on calling the dealer this morning.

I was looking at this rig too, but after going through all the records (lack of) and car fax I quickly excluded it.

With all these posts about "is this a good deal" lately I'm confused...a good 100 with low ish miles is hard to find, a low mile one that's also a good price is VERY hard to find. If I found one and thought I might want to buy it the absolute last place I'd post about it is on this forum where there are a ton of people looking for one.

It's the same principles for buying any used car...pick the one you want (100 cruiser, check), pick an age and mileage range that's in your price range, find one with a good maintenance history (in the case of Toyota/Lexus just plug the VIN into the manuf owner website and look), try to get one that hasn't been in an accident and has lowest number of owners you can find.

KBB, NADA, ClearBook will all tell you what kind of deal it is.

Remember when buying a 10+ year old car if it's spent part of it's life where they salt the roads a lot in the winter expect rust...if that's a deal breaker for you then look for a vehicle that has lived in a salt free state.

For buying a truck out of state that's as popular as these I would check to see if they'll hold the truck for you with a deposit, it's the only way I was able to snag mine. Between the time I called with a deposit and showed up to a dealer to get it, seven people showed up with offers.

Timing is everything. Was talking with the dealer in CA, but didn't feel 100% about the lack of service records and buying sight unseen.

I was in KC for the weekend, I did a quick check on CL that evening and saw this one posted. Put a time together for this morning, and it was everything I hoped for! Great records, decent miles, from the south/midwest, minimal rust, fair price, and a OME lift to boot!
