Hey guys I just picked up a 1990 HDJ81 at auction. I’ve got a ticking noise that sounds like it’s coming from the bell housing, oil pan area. I’ve tried narrowing it down to a specific but unable to. If I accelerate it gets faster. It does almost sound sporadic and not like a rod knock. I’ve been reading up on various ticking, knocking noises the 1HDT makes. It sounds like it’s fairly common but no one seems to know exactly where it’s coming from.
Ive only put 10 miles on it so far. I’ve got BEB’s coming but I’m pretty sure they have been done (land cruisers direct imported originally) but I don’t have any maintenance history. Ive also got oil, filter and fuel filter coming so hoping new oil does the trick.
Could this be the torque converter? It seems to drive and shift well. This is a fully hydro auto tranny.
Would you be worried about this sound?

You could do an oil analysis through blackstone for piece of mind. $35 for the kit and blackstone will send you a detailed analysis with recommendation.
