Live and learn right, after doing this little part I think I'm comfortable enough to tackle the rest if I have to.

Wheel bearing tightened, added moly to knuckle and now the noise appears gone. Thanks for all the help guys.

Noise came back this morning as I was pulling into work's parking lot, then there was a pop, and now no drive without engaing the CDL. Anybody got a spare birf?

Have you done a full axle rebuild?
Matt, sounds like you need to purchase a rebuild kit including bearings and go from there. Lane Anderson has stripped many a thread(splines) in his front axle recently. I really hope this isn't what's happned to you because he had to replace both birfs, flanges and axle shafts.

The axle rebuild was supposed to have been done when I had that birf replaced so I have to assume so but I didn't do so I'm not sure. I going to hope for the best that is doesn't require a axles all around.

eek, hoping the side that is giving you issues is not the side with the new birf...

....And here's a quick check... pop off the dust caps to see which side isn't spinning. With the dust cap off you can also see if it's the drive flange that is stripped or the birf splines. You'll want a buddy to help you since the truck will be trying to move while someone else watches.
If the flange is not stripped nor is the birf... and it still doesn't move then you have a busted birf or stripped axle shafts. but even when a birf is busted it still tries to move... unless it's completely exploded.

It was. FML. Anybody want to buy a 92 FJ80 needs axle work.

Right now my thought is busted birf unless the drive flange and spline stripped between this morning and and last week when I had it opened. When I put it in drive I can hear something grinding but I'm not sure where it is other than the side it's coming from. Since I'm at work am I safe to drive it home with the CDL engaged to at the least get it home?

What is FML? and it was the new birf side? damn. It's not the birf then... something is stripped.

HONESTLY, I'd drop the front drive shaft to get it home with the CDL engaged.... that's me. That way no more bad things happen to it "under load".

Really want to sell it? I have someone down here trying to find a 3FE'd 80... but I understand your frustration, but these front axles will always give you some kind of problem so might as well roll up your sleeves and learn every little thing about them.

Who installed the new birf? SURELY they packed it with grease... If they didn't pack it with grease i suppose it could blow from heat...

Just frustrated so no at this time I don't want to sell unless they have more money than Landcruiser knowledge. I have no idea it they did the install right to be honest but I will know the next time. Guess I'll get it home and go from there for now.

Are you at the south side of bham or n.side?

I have spare axle shafts if it ends up being that. Did the birf come from China or where?
You can always pull all that crap and drop your front drive shaft and roll 2WD for a while until you can save ducketts to buy new stuff...

Northside and the brif came from Slee so whatever he sells. And pulling and dropping looks like the way I'm going to roll right now but I still have to get it home.

Just pull the shaft to get it home... need two open 12mm wrenches

You HAVE to pull the fornt dirve shaft now, just need to stop all the spinning under load ASAP.

I guess I know what I'm doing at lunch then.

My B... that was you DON'T HAVE to... but i would.

Well I'm 10 miles from the house so I'm thinking try and limp home and pull it then. I hope.

Okay so I popped the dust cap of at lunch and I got no spinny at the drive flange so I guess it's either a stripped inner axle or a busted birf.
