I have thought about doing that, not with a newer axle housing but with one out of a 91-92. I figured that might be easier. Hopefully I'll have a better idea as to what is going on tonight.

with regard to an axle swap. Every axle I've seen that's been sitting will need a minimum of brake rotors. Gotta pull the hub for that, so now you need a gasket kit... IMHO, it's not worth it unless something is broken.

my point was...if the birf is broken, spindle is burned up, diff is seized for some reason - it makes more sense to me to get a newer axle, rebuild it on the bench, and swap it in in a couple of hours without all of the downtime on the truck. If it is just a birf - replace it and move on. Something caused the birf to break though, and the full axle + rebuild kit would probably be less than a new birf + spindle.

very true

plus, once he has an elocker in the front he's gonna want an aussie in the back. Once he's locked front and rear he's going to need some sliders, a lift, and some 35's. Then he's gonna want some high clearance bumpers and probably move up to 37's, cause the 35's don't look big enough any more. then he's gonna break both his birf's and need some longfields. Then he's gonna need a part time kit, and he might as well do the manual swap with the splitcase and the toybox, chop the top, get some 38's cause now he has the gearing and then a full cage and a 2fe and ...

....be looking for a clean '07 Tundra to tow it to the long distance parks and surf the web all day looking at craigslist because it's more fun than his work.

So should I fix it or try to find an 07 Tundra I'm confused now?

prior to last night, i was looking for a diesel F250 in the 7.3 era.... well, i parked beside a tricked out Tundra and DAMN it's badass. i knew they would tow 10K lbs but i didn't realize is how cheap they can be... Them being only 3 years old i may find one on a big car lot that may take my tC in on trade... the stars would have to align though...

I keep trying to convince my wife that her xc90 is too small so we can trade up to a 100. if gas prices go up again you shoud be able to make that swap no problem. that's how we moved from our accord to the volvo - we actually came out ahead because we sold the honda when gas was at the peak a couple of years ago and people were giving away suvs.

Runaway, runaway aaahhhhhh. Hopefully I'll have pics tonight for diagnoses I hope.

Okay so after breaking an extension and possibly a socket I'm going to concede defeat tonight. I have considered spraying it with WD40 cause that's what I've got and letting it soak.

I think it's a broken birf.

WHOA! that was the new one? He should warranty that... no offroading and unlocked? That's BS

PS.... it's the long birf... how do I know? it's got the ABS ring on it...

Okay is it being the long birf a problem if i have the right flange and I agree it should be warrantied but I've got no papers. On the good side at least it's just a birf.

that'd be an 80's forum question.

I guess I'll start a thread over there and call Slee to see if they can do anything. What was the c-clip that you were talking about? I didn't see anything that would that would make me think there was one.

Is that rust in there and did you clean the grease out or was it that dry? it looks like it might be dry to me. How did the diff fluid look when you drained it? how was the axle seal? I'm assuming the front drive shaft is off, I would stick the axle shaft back in the diff and make sure it is funtioning correctly before moving forward. the c-clip we were talking should be holding that star on the axle shaft.
