New Newfields SUCK

That sucks big birf. Did they send you the right one? Wonder if they send one designed to not take the ABS.

There is a place for the ring. It goes on with some resistance, then slides right off.
It is just like the one I had from MAF. I wounder if CVUN used the same vendor as MAF did?
The old Newfield fit the ring just like the OEM one did.

How are you installing the ring? Are you trying to reuse the ring that you previously hammered on an earlier replacement birfield?

You could knurle the newf or the inside of the ring, time and $ may be prohibitive.

kurt, this reminds me of that episode of Fawlty Towers where Basil hires the cheap contractors (Mr. O'Reilly). You are Basil hiring cheap contractors over and over. Sorry, but it is true. In that spirit, I would go and insert the newfield in the newfield guy axle end first. Then, just give in and go OEM (Mr. Stubbs), or if you are cheap like me (and I know you are), try used oem from a low miles wreck.

Kurt you might try Red Locktite on that ring. And before you go nuts about dissassembly Red or in that matter any locktite's bond is easily broken with some heat from a torch. Nothing all that much either. I've tore down an assembly with one of those butane torches that was red together. Just apply heat till smoke appears and your good.

I think I will wind up sticking with my first gen. Newf's. I had to buy them about a year ago on $$ and time constraints.

I'm just saving $$ to pick up some oem's from someone. Thinkin' I'll carry those as spares and then replace when neccessary. :(

Hopefully Newfield will get this right but if they cannot/willnot fix:

Isn’t the part of the shaft where the abs ring sits larger than the rest? (Working from faulty memory) if so if so it is not the weak spot and has some strength you can give up you could put some small tack welds between the ring and shaft, without heating deeply and loosing much strength. It has no load you just need to keep it in place

You might also consider staking it on by pounding some of the ring material into the shaft with a punch

As the ABS ring is not sold by Toyota without the birfiled, I don't want to weld it.
I would hate to have Locktite or other material let go and have the ring free floating in the knuckle.
If CV can't get it right I will try to find some good used OEM ones.

Kurt,

You deserve a Father's Day present so here is one from 'ole Beo:

You have struggled with your birfs going on 2 years or so. Wouldn't it occur to you that it would be a good idea to ask your wife to buy 2 new birfields from C-Dan and then you can repair your truck one final time, then repack your birfs every 4 or 5 years, and be done with it?

-B-

Would it be too forward of me to mention that I JUST happen to have 2 in stock? (along with the correct drive flanges I might add) :flipoff2:

I called CV and they said they would send out another pair.
I said to MAKE SURE THAT THE ABS RING WILL WORK!!!
I have to call them on WEN to see what they find out about it.

<Flange>
I found one flange!

<F-day>
I got a reclining patio lounge chair.

<Pipe>
I got the Turdvalanche almost, well...closer to be done tonight... I just need some expanding foam and more caklking.

Whuts "caklking", or was that Carol King?

Called CVUN, they said to take a chisel and put 4 dings in the inside of the ABS ring.
The tech said that the ABS ring of the LAND ROVER is soft metal (lead like). Dinging up the inside of the ring will make it grab the Newfield.
NOT!!!!
The ring of the ABS is very very hard metal. When I was beating the ring "like Junk was my step child" to get it on the MAF birf, I couldn't even dent the metal.

I told them the metal is very hard. They said that they would ding up the newfield where the ring goes and send it to me.

The Pinzgaueris starting to look better every day:D

What they are describing is staking, we use it to hold in small bearings in rod ends, with a blunt pointed punch you should be able to move the metal enough

Got antoher new newer Newfield. They took a chisel and marked up the newfield where the ring goes. It works to hold the ABS rings on.
Now I hope they don't click,grind and ring..... or brake!!!!!
