Hi all! I need your help. I'm a long time Toyota man. Currently restoring an 1981 FJ40 in my garage and drive a 98 Tacoma XCab 4x4. However, I'm ready for my next Toy and have decided on a late model 4Runner (or Land Criuser)with a Diesel Engine for business. Now, I live in Cleveland, Ohio, USA (once a free country) and have just discovered that Toyota doesn't (won't) sell that in the US. The only way is by-way of Canada or Mexico. And, after a long distant call to Toyota Canada, they don't sell them either. I know Toyota builds them! I've seen pictures...........that's how I figured it out! What's the word? I read about going through a RI? Can they get one for me? Anyone know of one here in the States? How can I buy one?

Check out the International forum on this site. Do a search for "importing".
Basically you can't get any truck unless it's 25 years or older, I think. Seems that there are a few people with newer "foreign" model trucks in the States but I think that those guys have property or an address in Canada.
We (Canadians) can bring in trucks that are 15 years old or older. This includes some very cool JDM imports. Guess you could just move to The Great White North eh! :)

There are folks that have European spec. '80 series turbo diesels in the states so it is possible but don't as me how 'cause I don't know. Those are obviously newer than 25 years. Those same vehicles are available in Central America as well, I looked at a '96 turbo diesel 5 speed a couple of weeks ago that was selling for about $20,000 with the same trim level as U.S. models. Mexico has had strict restrictions on new vehicle sales and Toyota was NOT officially available there till in 2000 and then only the Corolla and Camry if I'm not mistaken.
