I've had what I would deem an excellent experience with my trail grapplers and they have worn like iron, for me, and balancing was a non issue. Doesn't seem as though any tire would be a bad purchase or a step down from one another, more or less a lateral change - I could be wrong with that statement. Which ever tire is decided on will see its intended terrain usage and DD action.

I know there is a weight savings with the Coopers, not sure about the Generals, but does that come as a cost (structural integrity) on the trails? Specs say the Coopers and Generals are more narrow which is a plus on the UCA clearance. I've never owned Coopers and I haven't owned a set of Generals since 1996.

thank you

I had the STT pro's on my Heep and the St maxx's on my 200 - the Pro's as noted would like fit better into the wheel well as they do on thr St - part of the reason I went with them in the 305.... the Pro's were a bit less solid feeling in cornering on the Heep in a 35' then the RT's I had in 37...... but they rode nciely and were fairly quiet for as agressive as they are. the Pro's and 4 of the 5 St's balanced out with minimal weight...... the RT's were even better which was shocking for a 37 ansd speaks the the quality of the casing.

I'm very happy so far with my St's but loved the look and grip of the Pro's , howver for a DD and with a pending increase in HP I decided for more gription....

Did you consider the Falken ? some folks are liking those.....

cheers

Agreed, I like what I've seen and heard from various people here in town that run the ST Maxx and Ridge Grapplers - no doubt great tires and aggressive for an AT in both looks and performance. At this time of the season and being where I am, geographically, I'm on the hunt for a MT to replace my trusted NTG's. I'm inclined to pick up a set of AT's as my road tire in the spring but first things first I need a MT.

thanks for the reply guys

wow that's impressive

... and a poor showing from the Dunlops! No suprise there, I think they are made from recycled shoes.

what about Nitto mud grapplers? I am going to swap out my KO2s this spring with either Pro Comp MT2s or Nitto mud grapplers. The Nitto MTs have a nasty tread pattern .. I am sticking with 33s though actually 33x12.5x18

Those mud grapplers are no joke. They sound like a flat tire going down the road. I have an acquaintance that runs them in 37's and he loves'em.

Those Nitto MT voids are yuuuuge... No wonder they thump like a flat...

I'm really leaning toward Ridge Grapplers if I can squeeze in 285/75/17's with my spacers...

I've ran the nitto trail and currently have the Cooper STT Pro. Have a good friend with the X3s. Have previously ran BFG KM2s, BFG KO2s, Goodyear MT/Rs, duratrac, Nitto muds, and various Interco TSLs and bogger.

Nitto trails in my opinion are a pretty good tire as you have noticed. They are neadlessly heavy though and they haven't been much better in the mud than others so I stopped running them. My STT Pros were very stiff for about 5k miles but now have softened up. I'll be honest, they are the most planted on slick wet high speed roads I have ever used. Since we spend so much time getting to trails, that was a surprising plus. They are about the same in the mud, deep gumbo still needs a lot of wheel spin to clear them. Overall, I'm pretty impressed.

My friend had the new X3 for about 2k miles. They were terrible in TN/KY muddy trails, just couldn't get a bit in much.

For reference to other tires, I ran KM2s for 60k and they were the worst tire ever, just terrible in pretty much everything. I was rather surprised by the KO2, I did Fins n things during a hail/ice storm and was quite happy with that tire (as long as not in clay). Goodyears weren't very good against punctures. Really there is only one true off-road tire, a super swamper TSL. That is the ultimate, it is so soft, so grippy, so awesome, that it just pulls truck through unthinkable things. Every other "mud" tire is just a mud tire in name compared to a TSL, like nitto muds. I never ran all terrain until the last 2 years, and new all terrains aren't that much worst than mud terrains even in the mud, so if you need mud, go big, if not, I feel the ridge grappler could be a good tire, but that 285/75r17 availability is what puts it above a KO2 for me.

Wow you're a tire whore...I love it
Thank you for the references and shared experience. I'm gonna stew on this until Saturday, maybe monday then I'm ordering up a set of something. Thanks again.

Haha, na, more of a tire slut, I didn't get paid for all those tires!

I just believe in trying different options when something I'm using isn't great, and I've never found a tire that is great, just good with a specific area of great. Maybe one day there will be the great white buffalo of off-road tires.

Wonder why so few offer 285/75/17

No mention yet of the Toyo R/T - mix of M/T and A/T? These have my interest....

Since Toyo and Nitto are the same, you could almost compare the R/T with the ridge grappler. I was reading where the ridge grappler used a softer compound and softer design for air down off-roading. The R/T had a firm better road tire. The R/T was really designed more for the Jeep and full size truck guy that lifts and wants the look, but mostly just drives the street.

I'm finished with my MT hunt.
Guys thanks for replying and sharing with me. I'm going see what these STT PROS are all about. Looking forward to the 11 lbs per wheel weight difference from the trail grapplers - if I even notice it. I'm thinking they'll be a bit louder which I'm ok with. Only time will tell.
Thanks again

I agree 100%. I have run several sets of TSLs in the past including bias ply (had one grenade on me at 70mph once when I was fully loaded driving cross country - that was fun), and there really isn't anything out there that compares. I think for how much better an AT is at virtually everything except extreme mud than the average MT, it makes sense to run an AT or very aggressive MT like a Swamper. I honestly loved those tires so much, but I can't justify them on a daily driver 200 series :D
