I have a Hobart handler 175 that seems to need a new mig gun. The welder issuitable for my purposes, but I can feel the wire binding in the gun sometimes. i have already replaced the wire line once, and it helped for a while, but I suspect that the liner is already wearing out.

It's amazing how frustrating it is when the wire does not feed smoothly..

Any ideas on a good new gun? Or some way to rebuild the one I currently have?

Mace,

post some pics of the gun.

Buddy of mine, Cam (atl zj) just replaced the gun and cable assembly on his HH 175.

Made it feel/work like a new welder. I'll point him here and perhaps he'll post up what he bought.

Yep, I replaced mine about 9 months ago. I was having a gas feed problem that I believed was being caused a combination of worn, leaky o-rings where the gun attaches to the machine just downstream of the drive roller, and a possible clog in the outer tubing of the lead. During my inspection, I discovered that most of the copper wires at the base of my original lead were torn, so I decided to replace it.

I bought an HTP America, Inc. replacement gun and I'm very happy with it. My welder is a Hobart 180, which uses the same Miller gun as the Miller 175. It uses all Miller consumables, i.e. tips, nozzles and gas diffusers, and has a grip that's more ergonomic. My favorite feature is a relief spring that helps prevent the liner from kinking at the gun end.

The gas feed issue turned out to be a sticky regulator. It's a high quality regulator, and only about 4 years old, but I set my shielding gas flow a little higher than most because I do about 70% of my welding outdoors. The regulator was just getting stuck and allowing only an initial puff of shielding gas when the trigger on the gun was depressed. After each use, I now back the regulator's T handle all the way out, which has solved the problem.

Mace,

The Hobart back end is not the same as the Miller. Get a Profax brand mig gun for your HH175.

Yeah, the gun says "miller" on it, but apparently as you said, the back end of the gun is different. Sorry I have not snapped any pics. I was too busy getting frustrated welding my racecar..

Don't see why it matters if the back end is different?

If you want a replace the whole kit and caboodle, the HTP replacement gun + lead Cam bought would work just as well for you as it does him, although I'm sure the Profax guns are nice.

The gun ATL ZJ is talking about is currently attached to a Hobart Handler and has worked great for hours of use??

The gun you linked to on Ebay looks exactly the same as his...

Personally, I don't like the way the HTP mig guns looks. The handle does not look very comfortable.

Mace, I may have enough parts to fix your mig gun. PM me your email address.

Charles

You do wear gloves, right? How delicate are your hands? ;)

The only noticeable difference is the trigger on the HTP gun is located in a slightly different position. It took a few hours of welding for it to feel natural, but now I don't even remember what is different about it.

I wear gloves most of the time, but always. Having delicate hands has nothing to do with getting a quality gun that feels good in your hands. I have no reason to buy the HTP gun because I have mig guns that are of much better quality and finish. I would buy the Profax mig gun with Hobart back end before buying the HTP.

My choice is the Bernard Centerfire and Abicor Binzel mig guns.

I was thinking of buying a Hobart Handler 175 Mig Welder used. How do you guys like the welder? Will it be suitable for sheet metal body work and for fabing some bumpers? What do you think is a good price for a used one and what should i watch out for when buying that model ... any isses ?
