The LTX Trail appear to be SL rated. I was excited at first as I love the Defender LTX and want a slightly more aggressive tread but not a KO2. Probably will go for the XL rated Toyo OC AT3.

Although SL, its load ratings are within range of LC stock tires. LTX Trail seems to be a slightly more aggressive tire than the famed Michelin Defender with maybe a stronger sidewall. That’s a win in my book.

Wish I had a direct comparison to the Toyo OC AT3

Update. I contacted Michelin and ask them for 265/70/18 P/SL and for a Tundra (using it as example) that does on-road and off-road (but no mudding), which tire would they recommend? LTX Trail vs. Defender. I basically ask them which is the tougher/stronger tire.

Michelin response:

”Thanks for contacting the Michelin Consumer Care Team. My name is Tiffeny and I look forward to helping you out.

Based on what you are using the tires for, I would recommend using the LTX Trail as this is our All terrain tire which is more geared towards off roading even though you are not doing it as often. The Defender is not equipped to handle it as it is an every day tire. “

That sounds like corporate speak with someone reading the comparable product descriptions. I wouldn’t let that commentary sway you one way or the other.

If the Michelin Defender looks too tame for you, then get the Continental TerrainContact or the General Grabber APT and be done. They will all work for mild off roading.

Maybe…but unfortunately, that is the only source that i can find to compare the two tires.

And given that LTX Trail just came out late last year while Defender is 7+ years old and the fact that LTX Trail is AT tire, i think that the Michelin rep is probably accurate. In other countries’ websites, LTX Trail makes mention of using latest rubber (Rally) compound to resist chipping & cutting and a stronger sidewall to resist punctures.

I think that the Continental TC is a good tire but i read that it may be noisy on highway…and i am not sure of its sidewall strength. General tires i tend to stay away due to past experience with cheap construction.

Taking off the 285/70r18 Ridge Grapplers and installing either the Revo3 275/70r18 or the 295/70r18. I know the 295 will rub the sway bar and the 275 would probably be the more daily driven highway choice.

The Ridge Grapplers were some of the worst tires I’ve owned. The amount of weight required to balance them was absurd. The dealer said they consistently have quality issues with Nitto.

I don’t understand why people seem so in love with them.

Between the grapplers and KO2 I’ve owned in the last couple years, the Grapplers are much much better in terms of tracking on the highway, wet roads, quietness and icy roads. You are right about the tires needed weights though and re-balancing every couple thousand miles. My previous KO2 were never an issue with this. I’m praying that these Revo3 will exceed in ride quality such as absorbing road impacts and a smoother overall ride in general.

Michelin just emailed me: LTX Trail tire is catered for 80% on-road and 20% off-road usage.

It is as if Michelin is talking directly at me! :)

I would get them if they actually made a real tire size in the U.S for that off-road use. Lol

I know! 265/70/18 size is still making me hesitant. But if that size turns out good, then it is a nice option…33” tire without modifying anything to make it fit.

It actually measures 32.7” and most likely less under vehicle weight. A 265 on the 200 would look real goofy I bet

32.5+ is considered 33. 31.5 is a 32. Etc
Gotcha. I had an appointment to test fit a 295/70r18 and it hit the sway bar at full turn. I may end up going with a 275/70r18. Hopefully with my 1.25 spacer it won’t looked tucked in. I’m not a fan of that look.

Don’t forget to make sure to change the spare tire too.

Good call and I’ll sell my never used 285/70r18 and start doing a 5 tire rotation going forward.

I run 265’s in the winter (and many others do as well) for 9 years on my LX. They are 8% narrower then 285’s and look no different then my summer 285’s.

And many 1/2 tons come with 265’s OEM
