Hello Mudders. Thank you all for the wonderful resources and dialog provided that it has been my pleasure of reading on and off over the years.

I owned a 40 series back in the mid nineties and have always regretted getting rid of it. I have always wanted to get back into one. Twenty years later I find myself with a small family and the owner of two Subarus (decent cars with some smart and fanatical owners/support networks). When we were moved from Hawaii to Virginia we decided to sell one of the cars and replace it with something larger when we arrived on the East Coast. Long story short, that replacement turned out to be a well cared for 2000 100 series with almost 170k. Needless to say it has been a great experience so far.

I enjoy working on my own vehicles and strive to maintain them to a high standard. This new to us 100 series combined with this forum is perfect in so many ways.

So... here is the first question: What tweeters, brand and model specific, have you all been able to cram into the stock enclosure? All the model specific stuff I have found relates to the now discontinued Polk stuff and to be honest with you, I would prefer something else. From time to time people mention MB Quart or Alpine or Diamond fit, but without mentioning weather that is a 1" or 1 1/2" speaker. My gut tells me only a 3/4" will fit in there. What do you all think?

Thanks for your time.

Welcome aboard!

Whereabouts in VA? I'm about an hour north of Baltimore.

Incidentally I'm also planning a modest stereo install and just yesterday was looking at the OEM mounting location. I've got no useful info for now so hoping others can chime in.

I'm going to purchase the nicest stuff I can find at a good price and am willing to do a little work to make them for if need be.

Thanks for the response. Please let me know what you are able to find out.

We are just South of the Beltway close to Mount Vernon.

Welcome! You'll see a few regulars here from the NOVA region. I'm inside the beltway McLean.

1" will fit. Not sure if it's standard for all tweeters, but my RE tweeter has a screw hole in the middle of the back on it. I drilled out the center of the stock bracket and screwed them in place after ditching all of the mounting accessories that came with...

I don't have any experience with RE. How would you describe them?

Well, although I like decent sounding music, I'm not a true audiophile and haven't heard too many other systems to compare to...but IMHO they sound really good. Definitely much, much better than the tired Mark Levison stockers they replaced. I have the their RE6.5C set which is their middle of the road set. I would rate them just as good or better than anything else in the $100 range. I did have to use the mounting ring from the stock speaker to gain clearance for the woofer...then I had to trim the door panel opening a bit to clear the speaker surround, but that is going to be the case for quite a few components...

Went with Focal components up front and 2-ways in the back - both 6 1/2".

Nice. There is a set of lower end Focals on sale right now through several online retailers.

Do you recall what model tweeter you installed and if it fits the stock location?

Thanks for the response. I also like decent sounding music. Audiophile systems in cars cost more than I am willing to spend and the inherent limitations (noise and positioning of speakers/listeners) far exceed my technical abilities and patience. The $100-200 range for speakers is perfect for my application. They tend to be a little more efficient so they will go further with a modest amp and with the way that the record companies are releasing highly compressed music nowadays a more accurate system is not friendly to my musical tastes.
