Hello everyone. I am excited about this site. My Goal is to live in a Toyota Coaster (diesel powered) and after much research it seems the best information/knowledge resides here. I am new to Toyota diesel power. I had 2 VW TDI Jettas and the mods I did really were amazing on what a diesel can do. So I am scared and excited at the same time to keep my mind challenged on this new adventure of Toyota diesel power/maintenance/performance.
 
The venerable 2H was seen in Coaster buses.. and later the less venerated, but still tremendously respected 1HZ was seen in them.. both are tremendously good engines. I am unsure what engines were seen in later Coasters.

3B's are cool and who can go past the simplicity of a manual trans :) But I'm old school.. It'll be slow, but you wont be racing it so no biggy..

1HDT and automatic, maybe not so cool but the fan boys do love them.

That's the one I would get. But you need to think of your parts supply. These are all 24volt as far as I know, and that adds a little more complexity into parts and maintenance.
Personally, I wouldn't buy one living in the US when there are many larger diesel buses and motor homes available. I really don't see the advantage of buying a Coaster outside of its market, as good as they are.
The engine is difficult to get to and to work on.

The 3B version in these are limited to about 50-60 mph flat out and I wont even talk about the hills.

-I am concerned with the parts availability, so my plan is to have the motor/trans/rear axle rebuilt right in the beginning to minimize major problems.
-I didn't realize the 24v though, so I need to investigate that.

I would not recommend doing this. Getting the right people to do a full rebuild outside of its intended market is risky. And the engine and drivetrain may be in perfect condition. They last 1.5 million klms when serviced properly and hot seat swapped in Australia. They are widely used as school buses, tourism and transport in and out mine sites.
Your hard to get parts are likely to be things like injector pump and injection parts, brake parts and 24v electrical parts. Things like oil, fuel and air filters can be available from north American dealers.
It would be wise to keep enough service parts to do 2-3 services in advance. Oil is usually a 5000klm service, so buying bulk oil can be a good idea.
Buy a workshop manual and start learning about how it all fits together and maintenance schedules.

They also come badged as Hino Liesse with a 1HZ in older models and the Hino 4 litre N04C-TC in later versions. There are also rare 4x4 coasters built for public transport in alpine areas

They were designed for bad roads and slow speeds in under developed countries. In those conditions they could probably beat a Farrari over a long distance.

I'm pretty sure it's just the starter that's 24v, like on the fj80's that came with the 1hdt. If that's the case, that can be easily converted to 12 volt. The 24v starter is kind of an overkill thing Toyota did. I don't recall seeing everything in 24v on the coaster I imported but I wasn't really looking either.

The 1hdt one I drove was slow, I can't imagine one with a 13b lol

They also have a 24v alternator. Most trucks and buses are 24v. On the Australian sites, they talk about adding converters to run 12v appliances. But I have not looked at all models for all markets.
The petrol coasters are 12v.
 
Fundamentally , the Australian and JDM are the same. But the JDM models are usually higher interior spec because they are used by hotels and for tourism etc. Where as the ARL models are predominantly govt and mining.
